Excursion to Auschwitz?
Hi all,

I'm sure the organisers have a lot on their plate right now so I don't want
to add any unnecessary pressure, I was just wondering if any thought had
been given to an organised excursion of Wikimedians to Auschwitz during
Wikimania as Krakow seems reasonably close?

I know this is a sensitive topic and likely to be deeply distressing but
I'm sure many of us would find it worthwhile.

Best,
Harry

Yes and no, there are many options in Poland like Prague. I don't know how
far it is from Katowice but it's still in Poland. In Prague you can see the
famous Charles bridge and if you are interested in past German history,
there is a place when Heydrich was assassinated. And also the church when
they hid until their last. Others may add.

Hi,

For both logistical and cost reasons, the Core Organizing Team has decided
to focus on side events inside the city of Katowice. We do not plan to
organize any activities outside of the city. However, attendees are always
free to self-organize tours and excursions based on their interests.

We expect to coordinate and announce our side events in the months leading
up to Wikimania, so keep your eye out for that on the Wikimania-wiki!

Best,

*Maciej on behalf of the Wikimania 2024 COT*

Hi Harry

I know the COT's are always looking at options and excursions around
Wikimania but this is one place where it would be better to make your
own arrangements as you said it has a terrible history. This is one
place that's best left to the individual, I'm not even sure I would
want to share experiencing that place with other people I dont know.
On a personal level. I'd hate to have to deal with a person who took
the tour not knowing the horrors of the place and having to address
that as a T&S person. As all these organised side events also need
critical numbers and some one two organisor best to focus on local
with minimal issues from attending

That's absolutely fair enough. Thank you for your answer. I wasn't looking
for one answer or another; it's something I wanted to do and didn't want to
pre-empt anything if plans were being made.

If anyone is interested in going with a group of Wikimedians, please feel
free to get in touch with me. If there are a few of us we could coordinate
plans.

My husband and I are planning on visiting Krakow at some point, although this will likely be after the conference.

Yes, Prague is not. It's Czech Republic and only shares border with Poland.
Thanks for correcting. For me it's a good way to check it again through
Wikipedia.

"With the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after World War I, the
state of Czechoslovakia was created in 1918, choosing Prague as the capital
city. In March 1939, Prague was invaded by the Nazi troops and was made a
German protectorate.

1993 Czechoslovakia was split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and
Poland-Czechoslovakia relations were replaced by Poland–Czech Republic
relations and Poland–Slovakia relations."

Hi Sašo,

Ah yes, sorry for it. You should be proud of, too bad the Wikimania isn't
happening in Prague but elsewhere. I would always think of Prague and
considering to visit whenever possible. It's indeed a beautiful city by any
chance.

Thanks anyway.

Thanks for checking! I'm interested in joining, especially if it's on
August 6 or 11 (to minimise chances of conflicts with other last-minute
side events). The page
<https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2024:Related_events> doesn't exist
yet, it would be good to create it as soon as some tentative date is chosen.

Hello,

For these planning to go — it can be an emotional experience, plan a whole
day for it. It takes a while to visit (there are 2 locations) and you might
have a depressing feeling for the rest of the day until you regain faith in
humanity. This is why others recommend it as an individual experience.

Re: Excursion to Auschwitz? [ In reply to ]
The best is to create collateral pages for people looking for excursions and to create small groups.

I spend quite a lot of time in Poland, but I visit the country thanks to a Polish friend, without him I would get lost quickly.

Krakow is quite touristic and in the town is sufficient to speak English, Katowice is a big commercial town and English is quite common but out of the big towns the use of English is not so widespread.

I went to the salt mine of Wieliczka by public transportation (I recommend too) but it was overcrowded (in October) and thanks to him I avoided a lot of queues and problems with the tickets.

Consider that these touristic points can be really overcrowded in August.

Kind regards

And others still feel depressed each time they are reminded of their visit to that very place where their family members were doomed to die. And might get confused by this thread as they connect “excursion” more with a sightseeing trip than a way through hell what it had been back in these days but would likely be also for today's visitors. Can we please very sensitive with this topic? Thank you!

yet, it would be good to create it as soon as some tentative date is chosen.

Re: Excursion to Auschwitz? [ In reply to ]
Well, actually the CEO of Auschwitz Museum is our fellow Wikipedian, who
edit Wikipedia since 2004 and he suggested to organize something Wikipedia
related on numerous occasions. Museum has a very well equiped Education
Center:

https://www.auschwitz.org/en/education/

with multiple activities devoted to specific groups of people - so I guess
arranging something Wikipedia specific - outside the official Wikimania
program - before or after Wikimania - could be quite possible - and I guess
there might be quite a number of people interested.
