Wikimania 2009 - deadline
Dear friends:

We are writting this email in behalf of
Wikimedia Argentina, to tell you about our concern because of the lack
of news about the jury decision and even about when this decision may
be taken.

This is not just a personal concern and is not
only caused by an understandable anxiety: we are being requested from
potential sponsors and media and we are delaying this meetings because
we don't know what to tell them. The worst thing is that we can't tell
them at least when are we going to know the decision. The Director of
our proposed venue is pushing us to define if we are going to use it
or not, because they need to set the 2009 agenda. And so on. We think
the Toronto team may have the same problems.

The last deadline finished twelve days ago,
and since then we had no news. We don't want to disturb nor to hurry
up the jury discussion, but it would be of great help if the jury
could establish a final date. If this is done, at least part of the
uncertainty will disappear.

Thanks,

Patricio Lorente Presidente
Enrique Chaparro (Vicepresidente)
Wikimedia Argentina

As soon as there is news you will hear it (trust me I've been bugging people
for ages now... and anyhow the decision is always late for whatever reason.)

I think Patricio is very right, and a "you'll hear from us" is not a reply
that is worth the efforts imho. The local teams have to deal with
relationships indeed, and I think that the very least the jury can do now is
set a fine deadline. I really have to say that I am truely disappointed by
the way this is going, and of this reply.

I know all this, but I get shouted at if I dare to ask. I am also
disappointed at how long this is taking. I suggest next year that a date
isn't set, or one that is actually going to be reached when it comes to the
deadline is set instead.

Patricio (and the rest of the bid team),

On behalf of the jury and moderators, I am very sorry it has taken so
long. My apologies also for not sending out a note to the bid teams
letting you know about the delay. As has been the case the last three
years, the bids are *very* strong and the jury has had a lot to
consider and discuss (as anyone who has followed all the various
Wikimania discussions the last few years can imagine!)

We are working on a decision announcement now, and I hope to post it soon.

Re: Wikimania 2009 - deadline [ In reply to ]
Even though Brisbane has been eliminated now, I too would like to state that
I find the delay to be dispiriting. While I appreciate that the Jury are
undoubtedly busy and that there are surely circumstances of which I am not
aware, all four bid teams managed to meet the deadlines as requested, so it
is a bit disappointing that the Jury/Foundation repeatedly were not able to
meet their own.

I don't want to be the perennial complainer, and this is not directed at any
particular person involved in the whole process, but perhaps better
organisation and a clearer sense of direction is needed for the next
Wikimania bid process that is undertaken?

Best Wishes,
Craig Franklin

/me takes seat, struggles to remove his boot, gives up for the moment
and feels like he's [[waiting for Godot]] :-(
