Even before the winner city was decided, I was contacted by a member
of Chinese team to help inviting speakers from Japan. I understood
this request they would have liked me as non Chinese to be involved
program organization. I believe some other non Chinese editors had a
similar contact.

As Transcom member, I would like also to know who of Chinese team will
be interested in translation coordinations. Personally I think it
would be better one of Chinese team will care for translation in
general and one additional coordinator collaborate with him or her.
Since there are many good translators in Chinese speaking community,
not only zh-en but also zh-de, zh-ru and so on (I don't know zh-fr
translator(s) yet though), it will make a sense some language versions
are generated directly from Chinese versions in case Chinese is the
original. And then native speaker copyediting will be helpful.
Translation and website setting up began on the mid March in past two
conferences, we have enough time find such a coordinator, but if
Chinese team have a clear plan, it will be nice for us all to know
about that.

Hi Anthere, sorry for the late reply since I have some daily job need to be
done. Also I just have some mail server issue with Yahoo so my last reply to
you is lost. I wish this one can make it to the mailing list. :(

OK, please see my reply as HT> below.

I'd like to say thank you to Hsiang-Tai Chien for his civility and that I
hope we'll do a fabulous Wikimania 2007 in Taipei.
One of the specific request I will have (which is basically the same that
the one of the past two years) is that we try to find funds to help
wikipedians to come from all over the world. We need to start looking for
such funds as soon as possible. And make this event a bridge between
continents.

HT> Thanks, and personally I will join the discussion and the organization
for Wikimania 2007 in the mail lists; I will also participate in the Taipei
team more actively. Although we have a large amount of local sponsorships,
it would always be better if more funds on travel scholarships are
available. The Taipei team is also discussing sponsorship details with China
Airlines (flag carrier of ROC on Taiwan) for deeply discounted tickets.
China Airlines serves many cities in North America and Europe, including Los
Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, Seattle, Vancouver,
Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Rome, Vienna, and others. We will work closely with
the Foundation in the coordination of sponsorships.

----------

I'd like to ask HT if all the chinese wikimania core team could join the
wikimania mailing list, even though it may be that some of you discuss
issues in chinese only. It is important (imho) that at least some non
chinese be involved in the organisation, as it will greatly enrich the
process.

HT> Some of Taipei team members have already joined the Wikimania-l and
Wikimedia-l mailing lists. We did not participate much in the previous
discussions on Wikimania Taipei because there were too many emotional
comments and invalid questions, and the team was already very busy with the
preparation of the conference. We will ask more members to join the
Wikimania-l for serious discussions on the conference. We welcome any
non-Chinese people to join us and we would be very open for opinions and
ideas because Wikimania 2007 is not just an event for Taipei, but an event
for all Wikimedians over the world. We understand that the bidding result
might let some people feel down but we still sincerely welcome them to
provide constructive ideas for this event.

HT> We will start organizing the Wikimania 2007 page on meta soon, and use
it as a platform for relevant discussions. We have also registered domain
name wikimania.tw for use by Wikimania 2007.

Also, I would like that all core organisers provide a little bit more
information about them, and that the role of each be defined as much as
possible. This will help identify areas where help is missing. And this
will help us identify who the Foundation should be in touch with for
various issues (for example, the Foundation (Michael) MUST be in contact
with the budget person).

As communications/website, would you like to consider my previous
proposal on wikimania-l/foundation-l?
Message-ID: <35be2a710610040421j5e718663v9ae4eda7ff4aa931 at mail.gmail.com>

My points are basically three:
- It will be more efficient Chinese team has at least one person who
coordinates translation from Chinese to other languages.
- I repeat here "other languages", not only English. For accuracy as
much as possible, it is ideal those who speak either Chinese or target
language as their mother tongue will engage translations, and I know
Chinese community is enriched with such zh-non en translators.
- Mainly managing copyediting and proofreading, it would be nice other
language translators will also be involved.

And I am glad to add, Transcom is ready to support the coordinator of
'mania 2007. People who will engage multilingual communications of
this conference would feel convinient at translators-l.

Questions:
- what do you mean with "English communications"?
- who will care for internal/domestic communications? One collorary:
do you think now we will need Taiwanese / Hakka / Cantonese pages on
the website for PR?

Cheers,

Hi Aphaia san,

???????????????????????????????????????

I have read your posts in both Wikimedia-l and Wikimania-l and I'm glad that you (and others in
Transcom) would like to help on translation issues. Yes I agree it would be good if there is at
least one person can coordinate on translation and we do see the needs for this kind of person
because we already have some queries from Italy to say they also would like to help on translation
and interpreting between EN and IT. And I think the coordinator is not necessary to be an Chinese
(or Taiwanese). I will discuss with the team on this issue and will let you (and others) get
noticed.

Now the questions.

When I send the reply I thought the communication in the organization for Wikimania between the
Foundation and us is mainly in English, but I think now we should also consider other languages as
well. For now I and ROC (meta:User:R.O.C, zh:wp:User:R.O.C) will be charge in communications.

In my opinion to have Chinese / Taiwanese / Hakka / Cantonese pages on the website is OK. However
the website is still not online now, maybe we can have some further discussions after the page is
been created on the server.

Thanks again for your help and, we still wish to know if there's any speaker from Japan you can
suggest. ??????????????????

Best regards,
H.T.

Great!
We are better now to set up "translators & coordinators" page?

Thank you for your consideration!

It means you two will care for translation in general as coordinators?
If someone would like to discuss about translation, he or she is
recommended to mail both of you? Communications are a bit broader idea
than mere press contact a/o translation coordination.

One relevant question; I am a bit curious why names of people who
helped past Wikimanias' translation into Chinese didn't appear on your
list. Are there any inconvinience for their involvement? (One
possible answer I can guess is they are now blocked from editing; one
editor I recall is in the Mainland).

> Thanks again for your help and, we still wish to know if there's any speaker from Japan you can

Ahem, I am afraid I misunderstood the request; I supposed you or the
programm team (I can be included though) first think who Wikimania
2007 would like to have and then I assign the list we are going to
contact. Would you like me to suggest names?

I think perhaps we will do better works if we are working
collaborative. Would you like me to invite Japanese project editors to
submit their ideas? (Perhaps via wikija-l)

Last question: the dates of the conference are fixed already?

Now examining this list (since I would like to remind with whom I
would work with), a question arose me. There are several sub-teams and
several people would work in a subteam.

All of them at a certain sub-team are equal? Or they have a chair or
contact? If other people would like to say something to a certain
team, is it okay to contact anyone in that team or recommended to
contact a certain person? And how? On wiki or email? Specially if
someone is on a wikibreak (incredible? Beh, it can happen and really
happened ...)

It isn't a problem at all for now but could be a critical issue in the
last minutes when all involved people are crazy busy.

> At the same time, we would like the Board appoint a contact person for us so

The Board would be okay with HT, I suppose (for your information, he
joined Communications committeee mailinglist as Wikimania liaison)
... or not?

What I wrote in the previous mail is: "hajimemashite kandesu douzo

Yes, we can have that page on the WM07 website. WM07 website is not been
created and I believe the page for translators will be set up soon.

Yes, Thodoranian had appointed me to be the coordinators for translations
last week, so if anyone wish to discuss about translation, he/she can e-mail
to me directly.

Francis Huang, who is in the list I provided earlier, will be the local
press contact person. For international press contact, people can contact
the Taipei team through me. This is because not all members in the Taipei
team are familiar with foreign languages and I can help to translate the
messages to the members.

The blocking is one of the reasons. However, now the blocking is been lifted
so I guess some of them might be able to help. We will welcome anyone who
wish to help to join us.

Yes, the program should be discussed first, and we welcome you to join the
program team. I believe someone in the program team will contact you before
the meeting is going to be hold.

That would be great. I think you can provide your ideas once the related
WM07 pages are been set up.

Hacking days conference for WM07 is been set from 8/1 to 8/2, and the WM07
conference is been set from 8/3 to 8/5.

Hi H.T.,

Can you let the list know where the WM07 website is located? Also, you
may want to make a more general announcement about dates (such as to
this list and foundation-l), if these are now set.

best,
Phoebe

Seeing that the dates have been set, I would like to point to our
discussions in Cambridge about having sessions about the future of
Wikimedia. Some of us who aren't techie enough to be interested in
hacking days might like to spend some intense time about governance, and
a lot of related matters. A lot of what goes on in the main body of the
conference also involves a lot of non-wikipedians.

By raising the matter at this early stage it should make it easier to
adjust the schedule to allow for this sort of thing.
