Great work, Ryan! This patch is the "missing link" that has kept me
from adopting MediaWiki as our Program's wiki.

Brion, in comment #5 on this patch, you mention adding an external
authentication hook. Do you expect to implement this Real Soon Now? I
can live with or without it--I only wanted to know if I should pursue
this patch as-is, or wait for the plugin.

A stub plug-in interface is in CVS right now (see
includes/AuthPlugin.php in the main phase3 module and
auth/SampleAuth.php in the extensions module) but probably needs some
more work before it's really usable to adapt the LDAP patch. (For
instance the patch as posted adds a 'domain' selector to the login
page, which there isn't yet a hook for.) If someone wants to hack on
that that would be great, otherwise I'll take another pass at it after
I've done some more optimization and upload-scanning work.

We're planning to take 1.4 into beta within the next week, with a 1.4.0
release sometime in December.
