You can override the $wgFileExtensions in the DefaultSettings.php.

I recomend doing that by copying it to LocalSettings.php and changing
that (that little detail didn't seem to be mentioned anywhere),
especially since the realease of 1.3.7 (which only changed
DefaultSettings.php)
