VNC viewer for Chrome OS?
On Linux or Windows, I'll use either the Free or Enterprise versions of
the Real VNC viewer through an SSH tunnel and both work great. I'm
thinking about a Chromebook as another potential option for connecting to
my Xvnc sessions. I see that Chrome OS has SSH available, and it can do
port forwarding. I also see a bunch of VNC viewer options, but they are
of a few different kinds and I don't know if they will work for me like
Real VNC.

Do any of you have experience with a VNC viewer on Chrome OS, especially
for connecting to an Xvnc session?

Is there any plan to develop a Real VNC (Enterprise or Free) for Chrome
OS?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

You will need to look at Java-based VNC clients. RealVNC does offer a
Java/browser-based VNC client. These clients will be slower in performance
than native clients.

There are some other solutions that are being pursued by the OpenStack cloud
community that relies upon browser-based VNC clients. I'll respond later
with some info on that.

Thanks, Marc. That's a helpful tip. With Chrome/Android becoming very
popular on tablets and smart phones, it makes sense to have a nice
solution for that platform. I think Java would work well-enough for me,
even if it is slow. I would avoid using VNC on my little devices, but
would hugely value having the option available in a crunch.

I'm actually very enamored with NX from NoMachine. NX is a compatible
substitute for VNC. I've spent time examining RealVNC versus NX performance
in side-by-side comparisons (visual/interactive view only). I've noted very
substantive performance advantages for Flash applications running on
browsers in the NX client.

In both cases, I was using the native clients, as opposed to the Java-based
clients. At any rate, don't forget to examine NX.

Interesting. I think NX can also forward audio, which would come in handy
sometimes. I wouldn't use something that doesn't at least have a Free
Software version available. That is the case with NX as Google has a
Neatx fork under GPL2:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NX_technology
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neatx

Google must want to use that with Android clients. However, that second
Wikipedia page makes the project sound incomplete and lost. I'll have to
look into it further.

Is here anyone using Neatx?

Hi Mike

We do have a VNC Viewer for Chrome. You can download it from:

http://www.facebook.com/realvnc

Ensure you are running the latest beta version of Chrome (Chrome 25 beta
or later).

Thanks, Linda! I "Like" RealVNC. Now I want to buy one of those little
Chrome Books...

Looking at prices, I'm not so sure. Maybe I was spoiled by the $250 Acer
with 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD I bought for my daughter more than a year ago.
I'll have to think about it.

Meanwhile I'm working on Android. More on that.
