1) backend error handling

4) performance
- andersb will provide hardware for paralell testing on FreeBSD 6,
FreeBSD 7 and Linux 2.6 (Ubuntu Dapper)
I'm still not happy about the fact that we don't handle the "cache
full" situation, but I guess we can live with it for now.
