spf vs sender id
Hi All,

Would anyone be able to tell me what the major differences,
advantages/dis-advantages are between spf and sender id.

Any help/comments will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Regards,

Rob Simpson

Re: spf vs sender id [ In reply to ]
Hi,

At this point, comparing spf-classic against what is known of senderid,
the major differences are:

- SenderID is encumbered by licensing issues (see the archives of ietf's
mxcomp list for more on this, also see
http://www.moongroup.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=31&Itemid=2
for a very good summary of the events. SPF is an open standard.

- SenderID checks against 2822 entities, whereas spf-classic checks
against 2821 entities (whereas this may change with unified spf, the
next version).

- SenderID is bad, SPF is good :)

Re: spf vs sender id [ In reply to ]
Sure, easy. SPF is a deployed, known good system that is working today in
thousands of enterprises. As the adoption of SPF gathers momentum, it becomes
more effective, and spammers are already running scared because of the threat
that SPF poses to their criminal empire. Add SPF to your site ASAP!

SenderID was an attempt by the SPF community to work with large vendors and
value-added ISPS to integrate the advantages of SPF with a more comprehensive
anti-forging project that was to include such things as digital signing. This
project has apparently failed, and SenderID no longer exists except on some
broken websites and in obsolete documentation. Don't waste your time deploying
it.

Neither one ever did anything to stop spam. They are (or were, in the case of
SenderID) anti-forgery tactics that the mail administrator can use as part of a
larger strategy. A hammer doesn't hold boards together - nails do that - but
you can't drive a nail without a hammer. SPF is more like a hammer than a
nail.
