It provides pretty complete low-level interface to matching, but no
interface to substitution. I do not think the substitution is possible
at all, at least I found no provision in perl to perform s/.../.../

If somebody can read pp_substcont, feel free to take the pumpkin
;-). The same applies to documenting/introducing a high level
interface.
