question on patent
Hi, all.

We're recently discussing patent issues in order not to violate other's
patents, before contributing our project Synaps to the community.
I'm wondering whether we could get any support from OpenStack Foundation
as we have little experience to open our assets.

It would be helpful for you experienced open source contributors to give
us some advices how to prevent infringement of patents, in my opinion.
Without relevant strategy, it takes too much time and cost investigaing
patents of other companies.

Can we expect we won't have any patent debates of projects contributed
to the OpenStack with Foundation members such as IBM, HP, Cisco, so on?

Thanks in advance,
Joonwon

Re: question on patent [ In reply to ]
Hi Joonwon. The Apache 2.0 license offers some protection on patent risk - see the final sentence of Section 3. The newly-appointed Legal Affairs Committee will be looking at additional strategies for the community to address patent and other intellectual property issues. Keith Bergelt of the OIN gave a great presentation at our Legal Track highlighting some of the areas we need to look at. As of now, I would say that OpenStack participants have different approaches based on their particular situation. I am happy to talk to you off-list about Rackspace's views. Thank you for the posting. Alice
