TL/DR: SixXS is shutting down on 2017-06-06 (in ~10 weeks).

In 1999, Jeroen and I started SixXS, a project which aimed to provide IPv6
connectivity to users who wanted to learn about the network protocol and
gain experience operating IPv6 networks. Our vision was to facilitate
migration to IPv6 in content and access providers.

We were able to provide IPv6 to 50'000+ individual users and companies in
140+ countries, using servers hosted at 40+ Internet providers in 30+
countries. We are incredibly proud of what we've accomplished together, and
how many people have gotten to know all about IPv6 due to our combined
efforts.

We are reaching out to you as you are registered in our system as having one
or more active IPv6 tunnels. We have chosen a somewhat symbolic date of
2017-06-06 to turn down the SixXS services, which should give you ten weeks
to arrange alternative connectivity.

We have completed a retrospective and rationale document, which details our
experience developing and operating the SixXS tunnelbroker over the last 18
years. We have worked through our plans with the many dedicated ISPs that
have
been involved:

We realize that SixXS has gotten a lot of attention in the last 18 years. We
will be reaching out to IPv6 communities around the world, to explain our
decision to them as well.

The article sums it up quite well, and the author understood I think the
rationale quite well. I've asked them to change the link at the top of
their article from a WIP document that I had sent to the SixXS admin
community this week, and instead point folks at
https://www.sixxs.net/sunset/ which contains the rationale (also in Josh'
forward upthread).

Obviously many users will be asking questions, or simply saying thanks over
the next few days. I intend to engage with the IPv6 community next week,
although my thoughts are kind of wrapped up in the sunset rationale here.
Do let me know if you have thoughts or further discussion points. Would be
happy to collate them from *NOG, ipv6-* and publish those as well.

I can see that, although I'd have been tempted to wait until it was closer
to zero (I think 6bone traffic was negligible when it went off, and 6to4
traffic was negligible when we deprecated it).

One detail not mentioned in the /sunset page. Will you leave the
ULA tool and registry in place (https://www.sixxs.net/tools/grh/ula/) ?
I believe some people like that.

This is an excellent question, which I'll leave to Jeroen to answer. Our
webservers aren't going anywhere, but it may take a little while to piece
out the ULA bits from the other database activity we have, and it's my
intention to destroy the PII (ie the database) after the sunset. I'll make
a note of coming back to this after the dust settles.

The whole site will go static, that includes the ULA list.

The ULA registry was always a inside-joke as they are randomly generated
they should never collide.

As the page states:

ULAs were not intended to be registered in any way, it could still be
that somebody generates the same prefix and when not checking here, they
might use it.

People who have a need for a globally unique registered prefix, should
go to the RIRs where they can get one.

Page also notes:

This file can be cached by other entities, solving any reachability
issues, and for archival and redundancy purposes. We hope that one day
either IANA/NRO can serve a similar list along with whois and DNS
delegations and will provide them full assistance to do so when the time
comes.

Thus plead with them to take it over. I am fairly confident they will
point people to the RIRs though.

I'd be interested in some data on the use of the ULA tool and registry, I'd
especially be interested in use over time. Is use of the ULA registry
increasing or decreasing over the last few years? Basically, is there an
argument for further or new work within the IPv6 community on this front?
Or, should this service just be sustained as-is, maybe finding a new home
or new support over the long-term? Or, should this service also be sunset,
maybe not on the same timeframe as the other SixXS services?

Personally, if anything, I like to see some new work here, but I'd like to
drive what that is or should be with some data.

Finally, many thanks to SixXS for their years of service to the IPv6
community! And, kudos for planning an orderly sunset, rather than decaying
into oblivion.

Thanks to all of you for what you have done. I used a tunnel and now have
direct access. Almost 300 ISKs, not too bad for a small construction firm,
eh? And only a couple of help requests over five years.
