I have two 400-48t stacked â€¦ well were stacked on 7.8e.4.1 patch1-r4 [non-ssh]

They seem to give up and f*ck out often .. (re the show stacking) or is it a code issue or do I just give them to the garbo man and put in a clustered juniper ex 4200â€™s

This is quite old switch, old - not supported software... do not expect
perfect behavior.
But - there might be some other reason - open your switches and check
capacitors on CPU board.
If they look swollen (1000uF) - replace them.
