Nessus for nubies
Hello and please forgive the simplicity of the question however this is where Nessus support asked me to turn to so here we go.

We have a product called QRadar which supports integration with nessus scans. Currently QRadar supports 2.2x versions. We are not Linux savvy so I tried to keep this as simple as possible using Ubuntu 8.10 with nessus.

I found some ok setup documentation but am really stuck on the plugin portion. We are trying to get this working ensuring the QRadar integration however we must spend $1200 just to get valid feeds.

What I am looking for is really two fold. First, is there a basic setup for dummies version on how to properly install nessus? I know version 3x is out however the Qradar product support is not from what I can tell. Second, is there a way to get any kind of demo or copied plugins in just to see of this works? I hear that nessus 3x has sample plugins but 2x does not. To me, there has to be a way to get some plugins loaded just to try it out. I even have a home feed on a VirtualBox VM and could do a one time copy if that was possible.

Keep in mind that again we are not as good on Linux but can follow documentation if it's out there. I hear so many good things about nessus and have no problem buying the professional feed if we can get the 2x version functioning first.

I'm pretty happy as nessus (I think) is setup per various documents that I could find. But when I start the nessus GUI the plugins window is completely empty.

Again I hope these questions found the proper groups and appreciate your time and help in advance.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving

Hi Brendan,

I don't really want to get into QRadar issues on this list, but I've worked with
several customers who had QRadar and they worked with Nessus 3 just fine. Tenable's
Professional Feed only includes support for Nessus 3 installs.

Are you working with a Nessus 2 that was embedded in the Qradar product?

If you are installing Tenable plugins on a product you did not get from Tenable,
the Professional Feed is not an option for this. We occasionally get asked to help
get Tenable plugins installed on products where a vendor has shipped Nessus 2 in
their appliance. This is not a practice we engage in.
