I finally got a break after trying lots of different configurations / OS versions / Playback profiles without getting anywhere:
startx /usr/bin/mythfrontend does NOT have the tearing issues observed when starting the frontend from the default GUI Desktop!
So next step: finding out what other stuff is causing the issues...
Its xcompmgr
And that's an issue that’s been around for a long time; fairly recent discussion:
https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/5564 which was closed with the release of bookwork w/ default wayland - which doesn't have the tearing issue.
So current takeaway:
* in X11 xcompmgr must be disabled. In previous versions of raspi Os there was an option in raspi-config, no longer available in bookworm; removing /etc/xdg/autostart/xcompmgr.desktop works.
* wayland would be a better option, but the 16-bit RGB 5-6-5 Surface mythtv creates currently makes that impractical. I haven't had any success trying to get mythtv to initialize a proper 24-bit surface.
To recapitulate my configuration:
* Raspberry Pi OS, 64 bit, Bookworm
* switch from wayland to X11 using raspi-config
* disable xcompmgr by removing /etc/xdg/autostart/xcompmgr.desktop
* using precompiled mythtv-light (v34/master). sudo apt install ./mythtv-light.deb will resolve and install dependencies.
