AMD Ryzen freeze [OT]
My living room backend (ASUS PN-50) freezes repeatedly to a blue screen
probably related to suspend and wake. Alt-SysReq+REISUB won't budge it, a
hard reset is required. Apparently this is a long-standing kernel issue
with AMD Ryzen. Is anyone experiencing the same issue? I'm trying out
ACPI=OFF in the grub kernel configuration.

The fact that this issue has been hanging around for months in recent
kernels is frustrating.

I can partially add some input. First My backend is Intel only and never,
ever shuts off or suspends. If I don't update it, it never reboots. So I'd
say your issue is not Mythtv related.

Second, I have a desktop that is an AMD Ryzen 7 5700G on a ASRock B550M
Pro4 motherboard. At first it had issues with sleep/suspend and locked up.
That PC is running Linux Mint 21.2. On the LM forum they suggested that I
run the most updated kernel supported by LM, once I did that everything is
very stable.

My backend is a Core i3-10100 which I bought a few years back and it runs
nothing but mythtv and some file server stuff for backup of the home
network. It's on Kubuntu 22.04. It pulls about 10-20 watts, so I don't
worry about energy savings. My 12.4KW of solar can make that up instantly.

I used to work for Intel back in the day when we were trying to get Sleep
and Suspend working. IMHO, we never got it right. The best you can hope
for is a lockup at the worst possible time after having worked successfully
for days and weeks.

I would suggest to also look at the videocard. I have an old frontend
with an Intel core2 duo and an nvidea videocard. It used to suspend
and wake without issues, but in the last 1 or 2 years it is giving
issues. Every now and then it goes into alarm on waking up and I get
sometimes video lockups, especially if I have used suspend to disk. My
present guess is that my videocard is starting to dement.
But that aside, videocards are known to have issues on restore and it
is often needed to save and restore the video memory separately. There
are several tools to do that.

Hello Hika,
This unit has integrated graphics, so I just have the Vega 7 graphics. I
discovered a BIOS update, so I'm trying that.

Like Jim my backend is never turned off. It never (well hardly ever - maybe once a year, so I never bothered to investigate) has to reboot and is an asus PN52 with Ryzen 7 5700U
Ummm the talk about video cards etc is not relevant!

An arrogant statement, especially as you indirectly state to not have
any experience with suspending.
In my experience a significant part of problems regarding
suspend/reawake are video issues. I do not say it's the issue here,
but video lock-downs and system lock-downs are by most users
experienced as synonyms. The only true way to distinguish them is
trying a remote login and if working (which means it is a video issue)
shut down or reboot the system correctly.

On the rysan nuc the graphics is built in to the cpu; there is no graphics card!
Making that point is not arrogant and I'm sorry you thought it was.
It may well be graphics related but if so get another flavour nuc, there is nothing else you can do (the cpu is soldered).

My bad: the unit is a frontend. The BIOS update seems to have worked, but
I'll give it more time. My larger point remains, that there are kernel
issues with the Ryzen's sleep and wake states that the maintainers have
been slow to resolve. It may be a case where they needed to revert code to
avoid a larger issue.
