Maxtor Diamond plus 9
I added a new Maxtor Diamond plus 9 80GB 8MB Cache 7200 RPM drive as my
secondary HD so that I can record more shows in MythTV.

I find that the drive is making a irritating "Grrr Grrr" noise when
recording shows(writing). Watching (reading) doesn't make such noise,
though the HD is not quite silent when reading too.

Has anybody else experienced this or have I just got a defective disk ?

Try and look for "Acoustic Management" options with hdparm (I think it is option -M)

This "may" make the disk quieter...

Also, you will find that much of the noise is being transmitted through the case. Rubber mountings, or otherwise stopping contact with the case will make some difference. Try removing the disk from the drive bay and holding it suspended, or place it on something soft at the bottom of the case - if this helps then look at the "overclocking" sites for a wealth of stuff made out of bungee rubber...

Beware that the above could cause overheating problems, or dead drives due to long term poor earth connections...

Thanks, that helped.

I did

# hdparm -M 128 /dev/hdb

/dev/hdb:
setting acoustic management to 128
acoustic = 128 (128=quiet ... 254=fast)

and the sound stopped !

Now how do I test if performance has degraded or not ? Is there any test
program ?

I tried

# hdparm -tT /dev/hdb

/dev/hdb:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.24 seconds =533.33 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 1.25 seconds = 51.20 MB/sec

This is the exact same number as before setting acoustic to 128. Does
that mean I still get the same performance ?

thx,
Saravanan

Acoustic management will negatively affect random seek time. (by how much,
I'm not sure...) AFAIK, the hdparm test is a sequential test.

I would imagine this would affect access times rather than thoughput, so for
Myth purposes I wouldn't expect you would notice anything at all.
