Hmm.
I picked up a 120GB maxtor 7200rpm, only 2mb cache, but works fine in my myth machine.
Cost $110 before $30 rebate at staples.

Excellent.. I'm a big fan of the Barracuda drives.
Do you happen to know what model it is? IV, V, 7200.7 ?

I just bought one of these from a UK supplier and the seek noise is VERY loud. Even holding and suspending it in my hands you can hear a loud clicking. This is compared to my Baracuda IV which is nearly silent even rattling around in a metal drive bay, and completely silent when suspended.

Just a thought.

The exact same one sells for 69$ after 30$ mail in rebate at frys.

I got 80MB with 8MB cache for 58$ last week, from frys once again.

There's probably an acoustic management function you need to turn on. Check Seagate's web site. You can also do this under Linux with hdparm, although I have never trusted this - I'd rather use a utility provided by the drive manufacturer.

This is also true of pretty much every other drive. I've found drive manufacturers to be inconsistent with how they set their acoustic management depending on how they're positioning a drive in the marketplace. For example, I have two Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9's - one of which purchased retail, the other purchased OEM through Newegg. The retail version had acoustic management turned off on initial boot and was extremely loud. The OEM version had acoustic management on and set to quiet. Performance of all current IDE drives is roughly the same given the same acoustic management setting. A drive set on "quiet" will perform perfectly well for Myth...

My Maxtor drives are both extremely quiet now with AM turned on.

I'm not sure about that. I haven't tried for myself, however, after a quick google I see the following article:
http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/seagatebarrst280011a/

halfway down:
"According to Seagate Automatic Acoustic Management Utility V1.01 and IBM Feature Tool V1.10, Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 drives DO NOT SUPPORT the asoucstic management mode. "

Also, HDParm does NOT want to change the params on this drive

Anyone else had a different experience with this drive? So far I am disappointed, I had ordered a Baraccuda V, but neglected to check the packaging carefully before opening it...

The manual for this drive available online specifies different seek noise ratings for "performance" and "quiet" seeks, so it does support acoustic management. There may be an updated utility - check Seagate's web site. I wasn't able to find even the old one, but it's got to be there somewhere.

RE: 120GB Cuda At Best Buy for $99 [ In reply to ]
After reading a bit more about this (no reason for me to do so except curiosity, but I didn't want to give anyone bad info either), it seems that there is no utility that can do acoustic management on the 7200.7. This strikes me as extremely odd. I would bet the drive itself is fully capable of acoustic management but the software currently available is not capable of interfacing with the acoustic management feature of the drive. Seagate must have some internal software capable of doing it that allowed them to get their test results.

I would honestly not purchase a drive without being able to set the acoustic management of the drive. Apparently this is not the only Barracuda model with this "problem". Stick with Maxtor - the Diamondmax Plus 9's also use fluid drives and I've never heard of one that couldn't have its acoustics set. I am not sure if other manufacturers have yet switched over to fluid drives or not (standard motors generally have a whine, which can get louder over time as the bearings wear out - fluid motors do not have this problem).

I used WinAAM to turn off acoustic management on my Barracuda V, so maybe
there's a chance that it'll work with the 7200.7?
http://www.heise.de/ct/02/07/links/218.shtml

(Yes, I turned it *off*... I still can barely hear the thing, and the
performance is better that way)

RE: 120GB Cuda At Best Buy for $99 [ In reply to ]
fyi these 120gig Barracuda 7200rpm drives are $88 with shipping on
pricewatch, and there are 6 vendors offering the drives for less than $90
shipped.

sorry if that's already been said, I just couldn't understand why anyone
would post that a drive can be purchased for 12% more locally than online,
not like it's a good deal, unless your hard drive died suddenly and you
need a replacement ASAP.
Re: 120GB Cuda At Best Buy for $99 [ In reply to ]
Yeah, I saw the two acoustic notes under the tech specs. Also,
www.storagereview.com gave it a real thumbs up as being nearly as quiet as
the V, so I didn't worry at first. In actual fact when suspended the noise
isn't too bad, but it certainly isn't in the same league as the V. I'm very
impressed with the Barracuda V - I have very little stuff which is HD speed
dependent, so whether it is faster, slower, etc than the rest is fairly
irrelevant, main thing is the noise.

I would be interested to hear if anyone tried the Maxtor 250Gb (or is there
even a 300Gb now?) drives, which I seem to remember were also 5400 rpm.
Sounds like a good myth drive...

Ed

I can barely hear mine when putting my ear right besides it... As a
comparison, my OEM WD 100Gig WD1000BB and its whine was driving me
crazy. My Barracuda is an OEM model, yours doesn't seem to, they might
be set differently in the firmware... it's still a bit faster than the WD!

Those are good deals. As far as the local store...you know how that goes.
It is all a matter of personal preference, I myself like to the convenience
of hopping down to the local store, paying a tad more, getting the retail
packaging and documentation, and the simplicity of return if needed. But it
was nice of you to take the time to calculate the percentage of overpayment.

And... this drive seems pretty damn quiet to me. Seems comparable to my
80GB Cuda.

Interesting. Thats how quiet my Baraccuda V is. Do you have the same thing as me though? ie the 8Mb 7200.7 drive (mine is a SATA one by the way)

Mine is completely silent while running, but when you do something which causes seeks, the clicking is quite loud.

Yea, too bad the convenience of buying locally is countered by the fact
that you have to pay at least 50% more (before rebate), pay taxes on that
additional amount (7%) and then wait 2-3 months to get the rebate back (if
it ever shows up).

You're right, it's all about preference. What do I prefer? To wait for
shipping - or to pay more and wait for my money. :-)
