MythTV Problem.....
Hi,

I am new to MythTV...I installed everything as per instructions on
their website, I use RH 9 with on-board audio (OSS?) and a TNT2
graphics card, with a Hauppauge WinTV PCI capture card. I am using an
anntena for broadcast signal (just to try this out).

Everything starts up normally, the mythbackend starts fine.
When I start the frontend, and select "watch tv", my entire screen goes
blank and nothing happens.
I have to kill the frontend process to get rid of this.

When I look at the backend window, it says something like "invalid
format" and "Vidioc_g_fmt:: invalid argument". If need be, I can get
the exact error and post it here.

Any tips or help would be highly appreciated! Please help!

Darrel

While I don't know the answer maybe I can help troubleshoot, did you try
it in xawtv? Try that, if it works then its myth, if not then its youre
settings.

I think your problem is the TNT2 card. I suspect the card is not capable
of supporting video overlay and that mean the box has to do everything
in software. If the machine is slow, you probably won't get it to work.

Try a more recent video card. Doesn't have to be a high-end one. Low end
gforce 4 cards can be found for $20-$30.

A regular wintv-pci capture card? You've got it set (in the capture cards
section of setup), as a hardware encoder card, and it sounds like it isn't.
Go back and make sure it's set to 'Standard V4L or MJPEG capture card'.

OK, i hope this goes into my thread; can't figure out how to "reply" to
a post here...?

The exact error message in mythbackend is:

Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV
Error getting format
VIDIOC_G_FMT:: Invalid Argument

xawtv works fine, produces audio and video.

please help!

I replied to your first message:

Please read the mailing list you're subscribed to.

Isaac,

I did read your reply on the mailing list i subscribed to. Problem is,
I changed that setting before; when I do, the screen still goes blank,
but now I get audio, and the entire machine freezes up, I have to
hard-boot.

does that help?

OK, someone stated that my TNT2 card may be the culprit, so I changed
it out with a Geforce2 GTS card. I now still get the whole-screen blank
screen, no audio, but an entirely different error message in the
backend window:

Changing from none to WatchingLiveTV
audio volume set to 32768
strange error flushing buffer. ...

Is this one easier to fix? ;-)

I hope someone can help me with this....

thanks!

RE: Re: MythTV Problem..... [ In reply to ]
I have been having the same problems with a blank screen when I would try to
view live TV or to play a previously recorded program.

My problem was that the ALSA sound system was not installed properly. I had
initially tried to run without installing ALSA sound drivers because I saw
some comments that there might be some native support in MythTV 0.10 for
ALSA.

I followed the description of how to install the ALSA in the documentation
and the "blank screen" is gone.

Hopely, this information might help resolve your problem.

wow. how could the ALSA sound driver cause the blank screen effect? is
this indeed a solution? (I'm using standard kernel OSS drivers with my
soundcard.)
