Feature Request - File naming change
I was wondering if it might be under consideration to use a file naming
convention for recordings that included more information on the content of
the files? My wife and I have been thoroughly enjoying our Myth box and
the entire Myth experience and as we use it more we are getting more
intrigued with spreading things out around the house, or being able to
watch shows from our home office. Using Samba and media player is fairly
straight forward to get our MPEG files (we have a PVR 250 card) running on
our desktop or laptop PC, however it is fairly cryptic as to which file is
which show.

Given that there is specific time, date and naming information, even
descriptive details for the shows, I was wondering if the developers would
consider a change in the file naming convention. I would like to suggest
something like:

DATE.TIME.CHANNEL.SHOW NAME.DESC 32 CHARS.nuv

What do others think?

Also, I was wondering if there is a more formal way to make
feature/suggestion requests. If there is a web page or a desired format
with required fields, I would be happy to invest some time in properly
documenting some thoughts/ideas I'd like to offer to the development team.

I pretty much tend to ignore all feature requests that come without a patch
implementing the feature. I have too many things that I want to do to start
worrying about what random people on my lists want.

Understood. I have no development background so my contributions have been
limited to documentation.

However, good ideas (whether mine was or not) can still come for all
corners and if there was a standard way to organize them it could lead to a
better project overall and those people who are developers who want to
contribute could select ones to tackle... I'd offer to attempt to organize
some things and filter and sort etc but I would need someone to help me set
up some kind of DB for tracking... that being said, it sounds like there
isn't the interest there in formalizing the product management side of
things which is fine too.

Oh, of course -- I'm not saying not to bother sending in feature requests,
just that I won't be acting on them unless I'm bored =)

I just prefer email for that sort of thing, really. At least with these
lists, where the user _has_ to subscribe with a working address, I've found
that it's much more likely that that someone will respond if more information
is needed as opposed to web-based tracking systems.

So how about an additional mailing list for Suggestions... one in which
the potential developers out there can fully develop an idea with the
users or at least users can add there 2 cents... you have to admit that
some of the suggestions that have come across have been pretty good...
even ones from those without the development background.. like this one
for example.

I'd just be happy with simply a text file placed in the recording
directory to cross reference the recorded files with the name and
details... that should be pretty easy? Hell, make it delimited so a
person could open it in excel or access on a windows box and sort the
entry's by title or date or whatever.

Either way Issac... if you were developing this for yourself alone, and
by yourself you probably would have given up long ago... Myth has a life
of it's own now... sure it's your baby, and no one can tell you how to
raise him... but what good father doesn't take good advise into
consideration even if the person offering it isn't willing to baby-sit.
But we all have your baby's best interest in mind ;-)

Please don't flame those with ideas... myth is nothing but a compilation
of ideas that has become reality... You never know, someone reading this
list might be afraid to suggest the one idea that you never thought of
and wished you did.

I say keep the ideas coming, and you developers keep running with the
best of them. I just wish I had your expertise... you better believe
I'd help if I could!

Joe
