RE: Documentation idea - was howIdidit: Debian+Mythfromscratch using mdz'spkgs
I have put a really nasty basic Wiki up for testing at

http://rs.wildgooses.com/twiki/bin/view/Mythtv/WebHome

It's nothing more than a shell, but it is something that anyone who wants to can experiment with.

At the moment you need to register to make changes (I think?). This could be changed to allow anyone to edit things though...?

I don't see any reason that the whole of the current documentation couldn't be done in a Wiki like this (subject to the main person doing the editing liking the idea...)

Photos can be uploaded and linked inline (ie so that you can see them). Drop me a line if you have need and I will explain.

Remember this is *NOT* intended to replace the existing documentation site, nor the mailing list - it certainly isn't intended to fragment the documentation sources into multiple areas either. This is a tool which fits somewhere between the two for writing up the conclusions of interesting threads. For example I have collected together all the Gentoo CVS ebuild scripts, tweaked a few and packaged them up - It would be useful if there was a place I could lodge these along with instructions on setting up gentoo with them. Or lists of useful sources of silent PC information, etc.

This is just something to kick around, please feel free to shoot it down. To take off I think this needs some support/approval from Isaac and Robert Kulagowski though - we don't want a breakaway documentation link developing.

I've been using phpWiki for over a year in a couple of projects I'm a
part of and its great! Although you do need someone to go in and freshen
it up a little bit every couple of months to organise things.

What do you guys think about adding a wiki to the mythtv site for more
informal documentation (have a look at,say, squirrelmail to see someone
else use this).

I can setup a demo wiki (twiki is my preferred choice because it allows
pictures to be added fairly easily) to show you why it is a feasible
method.

The idea is that it is slightly more structured than a forum (personally
I find these very useful, but you have to read and digest a lot to find
the answer). But it is less structured than the professional docs that
get put on the main documentation website.

The idea of a wiki is that every page has an edit link and so it is easy
to update it and add to it. For example if we have a "Success Stories"
page, then people could easily add to it, and because it is more like
documentation it should be slightly easier than say reading through the
forum thread on this mailing list about success stories.

However, we would still keep discussion here on the mailing list. The
point is that the mailing list tends to contain huge nuggets of gold,
but it is quite well watered down by each preceding discussion before it
is solved. Having something like the wiki would give people a place to
jot down the conclusions easily perhaps...

Any comments?

I could see something like this as very useful for everyone
to gather their notes/write-ups in a single place. I've seen
several people already mention links to their own sites where
they are documenting their own experiences. If everyone who
has done that can organize it well in this one location, then
whoever is working on the official documentation (primarily
Robert it appears) could have a good organized resource for
input.

Basically I think it could be a really good scratchpad for
fleshing out and enhancing the real documentation. :)

As I said before, I'm not opposed to getting docs submitted by
people. However, I prefer the wait and see approach, since there are
plenty of ideas floated here in the ML that never get past the "me
too" stage.

If it appears that the community is supporting an external website,
I'll add a link to it in the HOWTO, just like I added a link to Erik
non-US and the hardware database websites.
