Best stereo TV tuner card for Linux?
I have tried to many cards but would like to get the definitive best
supported TV tuner card for mythtv.

I plan to use Red Hat 8, and want: stereo sound, remote, svideo or rca
out to tv, and of course bttv support for pass through of the pci bus to
eliminate my current situation of pass through cable.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Below is the list of cards I have tried but all needed pass through
cables:

http://info.lindows.com/tomw/tuner_cards.html
I like the: Happaugue WinTV 44371 Rev D123 but I still had to use pass
through cables.

Thanks

I'm sorry, I can't recommend a good stereo tuner at the moment, but I would like to caution you on the use of Redhat 8. There are tons of little tweaks that are necessary to get MythTV running on RH8, and I had a hell of a time getting it to work...

Thanks for the heads up. I had no problem installing on RedHat 8
actually. I just followed the excellent FAQ's. As long as I followed
the info on RedHat, it worked fine. Just trying to do away with the
pass through cable on my current card.

On that note, why does everyone try to do away with the pass-through cable? I have an ATi TV-Wonder VE, and it's mono... Will I gain anything by using btaudio? Is it worth the headache? (I actually had it kinda working before)....

Re: Best stereo TV tuner card for Linux? [ In reply to ]
I have a 2 tuner setup. An ati tv wonder and ati tv wonder ve. I got
the tv wonder (not ve) working via btaudio (hence no pass through cable)
freeing up my onboard audio which I will use as an all purpose linux
audio device so that mythtv will have exclusive use of my sblive.

Really? I run RedHat 8.0 and have had no problem... I even got Qt 3.1.2
installed *with* Xft support and *no* patches. Of course, I've adopted
the practice of installing everything from source tarballs, which kind
of defeats the purpose of an rpm-based system :-)

I'm going to give Gentoo a try as soon as I can figure out how to get my
wireless network card up and running with the stage1/2/3 install.

can't say that it's the "best", since it's the only TV card I've
tried under linux in the last couple years, but several folks here,
including myself (in a recent btaudio thread) have mentioned success
using btaudio with the Hauppauge WinTV-dbx Model 401.

RE: Best stereo TV tuner card for Linux? [ In reply to ]
Hi,
I guess that there will be less loss/noise and one less bit of wire around
the back of the PC, not to mention the fact that you get your LineIN
connector back for use with other things...

Also, generally, there have been a few problems with newbies to MythTV
getting sound to work along the lines of "my sound is out of sync with the
video" and "when I shutdown MythTV, the sound is not muted" where they have
forgot to mute LineID and set it to record etc. etc.

I guess that if you have a working system, that is satisfactory, I can't
think of any good reason to change it.
Getting btaudio to work can be just as much a headache depending on your
individual setup....

Regards,
Ralph

I have used this one too and it works great. If you want some of the
same features for less $ you can go with the AverTV card. It has the
dbx and a bttv tuner chip for about $49 as compared to $79 for the
WinTV. The Aver is missing the remote control and has no FM tuner,
basically it's no-frills and it works great with btaudio too.

Would you mind posting your modules.conf? I have the AverTV Stereo and
just got a WinTV (Model 400) and would like to get at least one using
btaudio.

Thanks,

Aver makes a full line of cards, so writing about "the" AverTV card is a
bit unclear. Can you be more specific about which AverTV model you are
referring to?

Sorry about the vagueness, I don't have the boxes in front of me so I
will re-post tonight with a modules.conf also.

Can you post your config (conf.modules, et all)? I imagine my AverTV Studio
is closely related, but my BTAudio is very noisy (on analog, or none on digital)...
