EPIA M-9000 Notes and Questions..
Anyone using a VIA EPIA M-9000 based system:

I finally got enough time to give the cvs version of Myth a shot. I'm currently
playing around with recording and viewing only as I'm not sure I have the
horsepower for live tv. One thing I found out by accident. I'm using the CLE266
slim driver with RH 7.3 and I got a new kernel. This kernel seems to have the
IDE patch applied as I was able to turn on DMA for my DVD. Kernel version is
2.4.18-26.

I have a few questions on items that maybe one of you has already solved.

1) Is anyone having trouble with serial port access? I (suddenly) fear that I
may have blown my serial port with static as I can't seem to get my perl script
to change channels. (I get "getattr: Input/output error" when I run the script
on the line that opens /dev/ttyS0.) What is required in the kernel to have
access to serial ports?

2) I have the box connected to my 32" TV via the S-Video connector. I have the
adapter setting for Overscan mode on, but I'm losing too much of the edges. How
do I adjust this without going to underscan mode?

3) Does anyone have settings for XF86Config or XF86Config-4 that will allow 720
by 480 mode? I see a mention of a modeline from the Myth FAQ (section 17), but
that seems to pertain to a monitor and not a TV. I use Ogle to view DVD's. (Is
it possible to integrate Ogle into Myth?)

Not bad. Last time my son watched Star Wars Ep I there were some times when
you'd see the picture jump. I think I might be able to make it a little better.
I've been using Ogle thus far as I pretty much need menus for most of our DVD's.
I'm hoping to figure out how to fold it into Myth someplace.

I am still waiting for the Nemiah (sp?), hopefully it will do better in
performance than my crappy 800.

Made more progress last night with my EPIA rig. Got the channel changing script
working like a champ. I think I might add a command to turn on the rx before
every channel change as I want to make sure it's on for a late night recording
in case it gets turned off. (Which would be ironic because I'm the only one who
turns it off up to now!)

I still don't get how to use recording profiles, but I do see that Live TV and
Default affect Live TV (imagine!) and Recording respectively.

Was able to do Live TV with 352 x 240 resolution. CPU utilization totalled
around 85% most of the time.

Is there a place where all the key mappings are detailed? I'm sure this software
can do things that I don't know about. (For example, how do I join a recording
that is in progress, in effect switching over to LiveTV from just Recording?)

Woo Hoo!

How do you think it would work just as a frontend? If you can do live TV at
352x240 it seems like you should be able to just do playback at 480x480 or
even higher.

Did you read keys.txt?

Also, recording profiles don't do much right now, other than the two
that are in there.

With the newer slim graphics driver it plays 480x480 just fine. 640x480
is pushing it but I also haven't spent any time trying to optimize the OS,
etc.. The hiccups I see are when you change channels and the OSD is up.
Once it is down, then playing is fine. Pause, rewind, ff all work great.

I have had some issues with various audio drivers though. The one shipped
by Via seems to work pretty well, but you have to use a supported distro.
The 2.4.20-ac kernel has a driver that works with xmms but not with
MythTV (video slows down then jumps ahead, no sound). The 2.4.21pre5-ac
works better, but I still have problems ("max headroom" effect). I also
changed some other stuff at the same time so I am still trying to narrow
down the cause.

I also have it booting over the net using PXELinux which works great. The
tricky part is getting your root partition set up correctly (which I am
still working on).

From what i recall 2.4.18 kernels had a known bug that disables interrupts.

You can't with the slim drivers. Maybe next version

Or try it with option "NoDDCValue"

How is your TV output with this motherboard?

I have this hooked up as my frontend, and the screen is over to the
right about an inch. I have tried using xvidtune but it does not seem to
move.

I am using Mandrake 9 with the slim driver, and things seem to be
running ok, just need to tweak things.
Mandrake 9 surprised me with the audio working with no problems, other
versions would not work right.
Tried 8.2 and the VIA drivers would not install, 9.1 R2 and the sound
was crackly.

Any tips from users using this board?

Thanks...
