Gentoo - persevere or try Knoppmyth?
We have used Gentoo for MythTV without too many problems (my son urged me
to "leave well enough alone" a few months ago and we stopped upgrading)

Well Simon decided to upgrade the kernel so he could get a game controller
working but then ivtv stopped working.

Found we are not the only ones with the problem with heaps of posts on the
forums about it.

I have upgraded gcc, recompiled the kernel but still no go.
Now changing to modular X but if that does not help (and I do not think it
will) we are thinking of trying Knoppmyth.

What do Knoppmyth users on this list advise?

Rob

Would always recommend KM as long as its pretty much a dedicated tv box. If
you want to use it as a desktop then its probably not ideal. If its a server
then thats ok.

I'm running Gentoo both on my desktop and my Myth boxn, I'm a sucker for
punishment...

Works great for me with little problems other than the continual emerging of
newer app's but what I've been doing for a while is "emerge -puv system" and
only letting updated app's update other library's etc. It may mean a lot of
app's sitting there when you "emerge -puv world" but just pick what you want
to update and the rest is done.

I found ivtv doesn't (didn't?) work with kernel 2.6.17. If you just
want to fix it and move on, downgrade the kernel. 2.6.16 works fine. I
don't think knoppmyth will fix this, because AFAIK they won't have the
bleeding edge kernel either, and the game controller may not work in any
case.

I use 2.6.17 with ivtv 0.70 with no problems - I did have a sound issue
originally which I solved with a patch from the mythtvtalk forums, the issue
is now being looked at by the ivtv devs AFAIK.

Thanks but I have already downloaded it.

Ran the auto install yesterday but did not get correct output to TV.

I am doing it again following instructions at
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?id=KnoppMythInstall
regarding the nvidia drivers.

Seems nvidia drivers were not even available via the auto install.

I am trying again with the TV (s-video connected) disconnected and a monitor
plugged in to see what happens.

Rob

PS - if I do not get this sorted out soon the rest of the family are going to
get MS Windows Media centre

Well at least I now have colour.

Which PAL version do we use in NZ?

Which VBI format?

OK I found this page whichs looks helpful for NZ users...
http://zaf.geek.nz/projects/mythtv/mythtv-howto-full.php

but it says to set default input to Tuner 0
How can I change that (or should I select Tuner 1?)

Well I am not having the same success.

Using Knoppmyth R5D1

After a fresh installation I go through the setup procedure and when I try to
set the video source it locks the screen and seems to do nothing more.

Maybe I have a hardware compatability problem (with Knoppmyth)????

dmesg before and after setup are different.

dmesg before setup (immediately after installation)....

Thanks for the advice guys.

I / we may be a bit late though.

I went out tonight and came home to a happy family with Windows MCE installed
and apparently working well with all of the hardware.

Never mind. I am not too proud to suggest that the Linux solution is any
better than the commercial offering from the other side.
I do not have enough knowledge / experience to overcome some of the technical
issues with MythTV by myself.

I also am wondering if the lack of a proper mode-line in our previously
working Gentoo MythTV setup was the reason that our Panasonic Plasma TV
sometimes turned itself off or even failed to start.

Bottom line in this family is that we can build a system which does more than
the commercially available PVR's for a better price and reliably.
