Hauppauge PVR-150 IR Blaster problems
I finally got my Hauppauge PVR-150 today. If I had known better, I
would have gotten the MCE edition that has the USB IR receiver...

I'm having problems with the IR receiver.

lirc-0.8.0-r4 (gentoo) doesn't have a driver for this one. The
hauppauge driver doesn't work for me. I have also pulled a patched
version for pvr150 from Mark at blushingpenguin
(http://www.blushingpenguin.com/mark/blog/?p=24) and that one didn't
work either.

The modules load and say "lirc_dev: IR Remote Control driver registered,
at major 61", but the device file (/dev/lirc/0) doesn't get created.
And for good reason because if I make it by hand (mknod /dev/lirc/0 c 61
0) and cat the device (cat /dev/lirc/0) I get
/dev/lirc/0: No such device

Advice?

You have set LIRC_DEVICES right in /etc/make.conf?

mceusb2 is the one you need I think (and it is available for Gentoo)

Re: Hauppauge PVR-150 IR Blaster problems [ In reply to ]
I don't know. I tried this:

LIRC_DEVICES="hauppauge"

When I tried the one pached for pvr150, it wasn't a gentoo package, and
I followed his instructions which created the lirc_pvr150 device...
which also didn't find my device.

That didn't work either.

I am experiencing other oddities with this... after ivtv loads, the
cx25840 driver
gives some weird messages:

cx25840 2-0044: 0x0000 is not a valid video input!
cx25840 2-0044: 1x1 is not a valid size!
-- repeated many times --
cx25840 2-0044: 32767x32767 is not a valid size!
-- occasionaly interspersed --

If you don't have the MCE edition and the IR Receiver plugs directly
into the card then you need the hauppauge driver. The mceusb2 driver is
for the external USB dongle that comes with the PVR150MCE.

Sounds like you might need to force the tuner settings. I'm surprised
you managed to pick up the older non MCE unit that comes with the remote
as they are hard to find these days.

Are you forcing any ivtv settings when the modules load?

Well I'm ready to throw in the towel. I've tried everything I can think
of. I've enabled every i2c device, tried multiple kernels, unloaded and
reloaded lirc_dev and lirc_i2c ad nauseum, rebuild lirc over and over
(using primarily hauppauge, but tried mceusb and mceusb2 as well), and I
still can't get any lirc device to show up... nothing shows up like
/dev/lirc/0, even though there is a udev rule for any lirc device known
to the kernel, and even though lirc_dev reports it creates a device at
major 61, trying to read from any such device file yields ENODEV.

lirc_dev: IR Remote Control driver registered, at major 61

# mknod /dev/lirc0 c 61 0
# cat /dev/lirc0
cat: /dev/lirc0: No such device

I can watch TV with mythtv or mplayer, and ivtv otherwise works. It's
just that this damn IR Blaster i2c-based remote is completely undetectable.

I suppose I'd have to test this on a windoze machine to know for sure
that it's dead... I'm not sure Ascent will take it back just because I'm
having Linux problems with it.

ivtv gives me this output (the "failed to load module" bits are because
I have them compiled into the kernel now).

yes, read it all.

As Steve from openmedia said, there are two types of remotes that come
with th hauppauge. On a quick scan through this thread I am still unsure which one you have.

So what, physically, do you have?

It is NOT the MCE edition. The IR receiver plugs into a jack in the
back of the card. I have been using 'hauppauge' as the driver, as
expected for this edition, but I tried mceusb2 just for kicks.

I'm seeing posts on the lirc list where other people have got problems
when they upgraded to linux 2.6.17, lirc 0.80.0 and ivtv 0.7.0, so maybe
it's just broken software at the moment...

Your type of card works fine on Knoppmyth with 2.6.15 and ivtv 0.4.4.
Looks like there are some shakedown issues with 2.6.17 and ivtv 0.7.0. Any
chance you can give a go with 2.6.16 and ivtv 0.6.x?

I'll try those revisions. There's nothing particular about 2.6.17 that
I desperately need.

Hmm...maybe I should setup a seperate boot for Knoppmyth, and see what
I'm potentially missing...

Yay! I found the magic combination!
Linux kernel 2.6.16
ivtv 0.6.3
lirc 0.8.0

Thanks Steve!

Now I can finally kick back and watch some TV.

Happy to help. Heard some interesting things about 2.6.17 due to the
work to merge ivtv into the baseline kernel.
