MythTV installation advice wanted
Having finally replaced my wifes PC I have her old PC that I can attempt
to setup for MythTV.
PC Specs:

AthlonXP 2000
384Meg RAM
30Gig HDD (will add more later)
Nvidia card with TV out

The card I currently have is the saa7134 based Pinnacle PCTV Stereo.

Given the range of distro's available I'd welcome some thoughts on a
Linux distro to put on this machine. I have Fedora Core 4 around here
somewhere as well as Gentoo, but am also willing to give others a try.

I would welcome thoughts and experiences, esp. with regard to the
Phillips based card as I have never been able to get it to work in Linux
before.

Cheers

Jamie

Definitely need more - lots more. 30 Gb would be good for the root
partition and mysql database. Get one/some big slowish cheapish drives
for data storage... I use three 40 Gb WD purely cos I had them spare.

First start would be to pop in a knoppmyth CD and see where that gets you.

They're fine cards - the saa7134 module is in the linux kernel and is
nicely stable. However it has no mpeg compressor, so your CPU will be
doing a lot more work.

If you want to buy a new/second tuner card you cannot go past a PVR-150MCE
card. They're well under $150, and have hardware mpeg2 compression.

An XP 2000 should be fine for recording and playing back at the same
time with a dumb capture card, but you won't be able to add a second
one.

That's plenty.

Yup, you'll want more.

FX5200 or better? Anything older will cost you quality.

I use Gentoo and am happy with it. But use whatever you're comfortable with.

I've got a saa7134 based card, a LifeView FlyVideo DV3000. It works
fine, no problems at all.

Where can I find one for under $150? Everywhere I have seen them they
are more than that.

Try pricespy.co.nz ( http://www.pricespy.co.nz/pno_853.html ) the OEM
card only ("Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150MCE TV Tuner PCI OEM") (no remote
need to buy it separately) is as low as $133. Cheers Douglas.

I'd personally advise you to go for the Kit if you don't have a remote
control already. It is a very easy unit to get working with MythTV. Sadly
the they still don't have a working transmitter driver for the USB
transceiver.
