mythtv 0.19 released
Just for those who don't subscribe to the main mythtv-users list, or
otherwise missed this: version 0.19 has been released.

The announcement is on http://www.mythtv.org (of course) and there is
an interesting list of changes at
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Release_Notes_-_0.19 (thats quite
a list!)

Half way through writing a how-to-build document
(http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Debian_packages_for_0.19), I find
someone has already built packages for Ubuntu Breezy:
http://deb.thehunter.ws/dists/breezy/mythtv/.

Another question. TV1 coverage here is crap. I have Sky Digital. If I buy
a DVB card, can I use the cable from the satellite dish into it? How much
and where from?

Craig

You might want to check through the archives of this list... there are a few
of us grouping to gether to import a few DBV-S card's from the following
link, there quite good and work under Linux out of the box, with the card and
your Sky dish you'll get maybe five free-to-air broadcasts... check out the
link and email Howard if your interested...

Given debian's stance on mythtv, should I compile it myself or wait for a
semi-official package?

What stance is that?

I see Gentoo 0.19 builds have appeared already (masked of course). I
might try upgrading tomorrow.

Off the same satellite as Sky you can currently get FTA:

TV1 (couple of versions - different ads for different regions)
TV2 (as above)
CCTV-9 (Chinese Central TV - English language version)
DW-TV (Dwelle - Half German Half English)
Nasa TV (Not just space stuff...lots of science stuff too)
TVNZ Wide Testing (Testing Channel for Wide screen stuff)
Maori TV
Bloomberg (Business/financial Channel)

The only catch is that any of these channels could disappear at anytime,
although some have been there for many years, eg TV1/2, and some have
just started eg Bloomberg - last week.

:D

The closest you will probably get is Christian Marillat updating his.

You can get an Ubuntu Breezy package at
http://deb.thehunter.ws/dists/breezy/mythtv-stable/ - it will possibly
work on Sarge. If not, the source is there, and cross-porting it will
be very easy.

I saw a comment somewhere recently advising against the urge to upgrade too
often. After being burnt myself I took it as good advice.

YMMV

I don't upgrade too often either, however MythTV is the whole point of
the box and 0.19 has a couple of features I'm very keen on trying.
Particularly the ability to remotely control a frontend via telnet.

Heh, last night I commented to my fiancee that there is a new version of
MythTV out. The look of terror on her face was quite amusing. She
doesn't like it when MythTV is broken for a few days while I upgrade it.

She has started associating the phrase "upgrade" with "break".

However, as I'm quite keen on the new EIT stuff from DVB feeds we might
have to go through the pain...

Its a *great* excuse to have a second backend machine with which you can
"evaluate" new versions. Myth is supposed to deal gracefully with a slave
backend that may not be available.

I've just upgreaded. No major problems, but mythbackend seems to run
now as mythtv:users instead of root so I had to add mythtv to audio
and video groups and change permitions of my 'myth data' directory.
I also noticed that now it takes much longer to change channels (with
0.18.1 it was about 2 sec, now it's almost 8).

RE: mythtv 0.19 released [ In reply to ]
I've upgraded from the deb.thehunter.ws/ sources with minor problems. The
only thing I had to reinstall was the mythweb plugin (which is looking
nice).

I haven't played with many new features yet - are the TV Guides broadcast
with DVB-T here in NZ?

I don't know for sure but I doubt it. Sky seems to be the main source
of data and I'd expect that they only broadcast on DVB-S.

Excuse my ignorance as I am new to the list but do we have DVB-T in NZ?

I showed Susanne (my fiancee) your email, and she said "No". :( Oh
well, it was worth a try...

Auckland has a few: TV One, TV 2, TVNZ test, CCTV-9, DW

I was using a Compro T300 to receive them quite nicely, until I installed a PVR-150MCE and they refused to stop working nicely. Does anyone have any experience mixing DVB-T and analog on the same system?

I'm running a Freecom USB DVB-T Stick with my PVR-150MCE under Knoppmyth
R5A30.

I needed to build a custom 2.6.15 kernel which has most of the DVB-T
patches integrated, and then add the ivtv 0.4.2 release. Thankfully none
of the modules conflict and I can run both tuners which is awesome.

Tuner 1 - DVB-T - TVOne, TV2, DW, CCTV9 and TVNZ Wide
Tuner 2 - PVR-150 - All analog channels.

No Epg info on the DVB-T signal at the moment, and we appear to only
have the one active multiplex. It would be wonderful to see a
TV4/C4/Prime multiplex appear as then i'd get a second capture unit.
