Mandrake 9 -- Help with ALSA
Hi All--

I decided to ditch RedHat and install Mandrake9 in an attempt to get myth
to work. I followed the HOW-TO for Mandrake in the cvs/docs and I've
gotten pretty far. Here's the deal:

I can run xwatv WITH sound. I can record sound on line-in via one of the
sound recording apps and it plays back fine.

However, when I launch 'mythtv' the system reboots! It doesn't just hang
it actually restarts the machine. Guess that this isn't proper behavior
for MythTV <grin> I'm looking for a little help from others using
Mandrake9.

First, I thought Mandrake9 uses ALSA be default. Is this correct? How
can I tell if I'm _actually_ using ALSA? Do I need to set up the proper
/dev/dsp or /dev/audio or /dev/snd? Does Mandrake do this automatically?
I think Mandrake9 might be using devfs...does anyone know if this is true,
and will it cause problems?

Any other helpful advice would be great.

Thanks!

Look in /var/log/messages for alsa.

It should also be in your /etc/rc.d/rc5.d On mine it's S17alsa

When the system is booting Mandrake shows if it is using Alsa.

But you need 0.9 (It is somewhere in the docs) and Mandrake I don't think it
comes with 0.9...Anyway I had to download and compile Alsa (I used the lates
RC version) and then I had to recompile Mandrakes Kernel (It would hang up
until I recompiled the kernel too).

Afterwards it stared working very nice.

Good Luck!

Mandrake 9.0 comes with ALSA 0.9.0rc2

Why did you have to recompile the kernel? I thought that the alsa was a
module that was called. What a pain.

Yeah, so far, that's Myth's biggest downfall...the fact that the audio is
such a pain to get working...and it won't work until you get the audio
working.
RE: Mandrake 9 -- Help with ALSA [ In reply to ]
Well you could try MDK8.2, it does not have issues with audio...

Hmm. I'm using MDK 9 on a K7S5A mobo with the onboard audio with no problems
whatsoever. I was using it under 8.2 with an es1370 sound card or the
onboard audio and had no problems either.

I didn't need to recompile the kernel - ALSA worked immediately,
since it's the default sounds system for Mandrake 9.0.

I was just saying what I did to make it work. And because it seams he has
the same problem...as I did I stated what I had to do to make work.

But hey, I'm really happy that it worked for you the first shot! :-P

No, I understand. Just wanted to make sure that we start with the
simpler things first. I'm hoping that we get a resolution on this
and determine if this is a one-off problem, or a general case. If
it's a general case then I can get it into the docs. If it's
one-off, then at least that's one more happy customer.

OK, apparently I've turned into a test case :)

Let me give you a little details on my system and maybe that will shed
some light:

1. I've got an Athlon 1700+ XP machine with built-in sound/video/nic.

2. ALSA is using the via82cxxx_audio module.

3. I only have 3 lines in my /etc/modules.conf file:
probeall usb-interface usb-uhci
alias eth0 8139too
alias sound-slot-0 via82cxxx_audio

4. Under "K->Configuration->KDE->Sound->Sound Server" the "Start aRts
soundserver on KDE startup" is UNCHECKED. Does this need to be checked?
If I turn it on, I can then go to the "Sound I/O" tab and select "Advanced
Linux Sound Architecture". However, if I choose that, I get a error
telling me that "device: default" couldn't be opened for playback.

5. xawtv works fine.

6. If I type '/etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S17alsa stop' it tells me that "ALSA driver
isn't running." So I type '/etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S17alsa start' to start it up.

7. When I installed Mandrake 9.0 I installed "everything under the sun"
so that I would make sure that I had all the libs and alsa stuff. Could I
have installed a few things that are conflicting with ALSA?

8. 'mythfrontend' works fine (except the "watch TV" option). If I run
'muthtv' my system will reboot itself instantly even if I use "failsafe"
as the windows manager.

9. Is there anything else that would be helpful here? What other info
can I provide to help debug the problem?

Thanks for everyone's help!

Jeremy

It's pretty much a one-off problem, having to do with bad hardware and/or bad
drivers.

Have you installed the alsa utils? I so...try the alsamixer...I had to play
with a couple of channels that were turned off that only were visible with
the alsamixer.

I hope that helps...(by the way you might want to try to plugg it to the
Mic...just for the heck of it.)
