Can you to an strace and try to record what you see on the screen, just
prior to the hang? Or perhaps you can try sshing into the system?

strace is a new utility to me. Thanks for suggesting sshing back into
the machine from another. Run locally the strace hung without storing
the file. I pasted the tail end of the script session below. I can
provide more of the strace if needed.

Does the ENOENT open failure indicate the problem source?
