What's an ADSL device doing recording video? Are these MPEG-2 transport streams? If so, are VLC or MPlayer apps available for maemo?

They are. just look for maemo mplayer or maemo vlc

I guess he has something like this:

and if he's trying to play HD .ts files he should probably convert
them before trying to play on his Maemo device :)
