Problems With additional tuners...
Hi All,

I am hoping someone can help me with some trouble shooting that I am doing. I have a box with three Hauppauge cards installed (PVR-500, HVR-2250, and the latest is a HVR 1600). Though I have the 2250 installed I have not built my antenna as of yet to bring it online. My PVR-500 used to work with both tuners but then a couple years ago the second unit just stopped working (no idea why and assumed over time, after lots of attempts to try and revive, that it was just dead). I happened across the HVR-1600 yesterday and thought it would make a good addition for the second Analog tuner that I lost. The problem is that it is providing the same static feed as the second tuner from the PVR-500. After looking at the logs I am starting to wonder if the problemI have is a firmware bug or something else and could use some help. The reason I am turning to this list is because of a line in the syslog in what appears to be the ivtv sequence.

Note: The Analog tuners are being used to capture video through the s-video cable from my satellite tuners and the digital ones are for future OTA HD.

Here is what I see on the two problematic analog tuners.

Can anyone tell me if I have an actual firmware bug or if this is normal? Can anyone tell me how to test the card for sure to see if it is a defective card?

Please install v4l2-ctl (probably in a v4l2-utils package) and mplayer.

Kill the mythbackend, if it is running.

Then run v4l2-ctl --list-devices, to see what card corresponds to which
devices nodes. For example:

$ v4l2-ctl --list-devices
Hauppauge HVR-1600 (PCI:0000:03:00.0):
/dev/video0
/dev/video24
/dev/video32
/dev/vbi0

Hauppauge WinTV PVR-150 (PCI:0000:03:01.0):
/dev/video2
/dev/video26
/dev/video34
/dev/radio2
/dev/vbi2

Hauppauge HVR-1600 (PCI:0000:03:02.0):
/dev/video1
/dev/video25
/dev/video33
/dev/radio1
/dev/vbi1

On a device from which you wish to capture S-Video, set the proper input
and analog TV standard using v4l2-ctl:

$ v4l2-ctl -d /dev/video0 --list-inputs
ioctl: VIDIOC_ENUMINPUT
Input : 0
Name : Tuner 1
Type : 0x00000001
Audioset : 0x00000007

[...]

$ v4l2-ctl -d /dev/video0 --set-input=1

$ v4l2-ctl -d /dev/video0 --list-standards
ioctl: VIDIOC_ENUMSTD

Frame period: 1001/30000
Frame lines : 525

Index : 1

Frame period: 1001/30000
Frame lines : 525
[...]

$ v4l2-ctl -d /dev/video0 --set-standard=1
Standard set to 00001000

Turn on your S-Video source, and then just capture an MPEG live with mplayer:

$ mplayer /dev/video0 -cache 8192

or capture a file for later playback

$ cat /dev/video0 > foo.mpg
^C
$ mplayer foo.mpg

> Here is what I see on the two problematic analog tuners.

Looks like an untuned tuner input driving the encoder, not S-Video. An
S-Video input that is connected but has no signal is usually a solid
grey or black screen.

greping for 'cx18' will miss any error messages reltaed to the tuner
chips and initialization. Anyway, the HVR-1600 lloks OK from what you
provided.

Your computer's BIOS has an ACPI bug that is unrelated to the video
capture cards, AFAICT.

Your HVR-2250 probably isn't going to work, given those messages about a
missing firmware file.

One last step is to verify that you do in fact have a video signal with
a known good devices (such as a TV). If you have RF analog or RF
digital reception problems, you may want to review this checklist as
well:

Re: Problems With additional tuners... [ In reply to ]
Thanks Andy,

You are THE MAN!!!! From the v4l2-ctl command I now have the analog working on both tuners for the 500 and now on the HVR-1600!!!

I am concerned about the HVR-2250 but that will be a debug to happen when I have an antenna built. At that time I can use the HVR-1600 digital tuner to test the antenna and then engage the HVR-2250.

Thanks again Andy.

Andy,

With the second PVR-500 tuner I am not getting any audio. Do you have any idea if this might be related to the v4l2 setup?

No audio for the 2nd RF input means there's a problem with the 2nd analog tuner can or a problem with the second CX25843 chip.

No audio for the 2nd S Video input usually means you don't have the proper extra audio cable/bracket installed. There were at least two different versions of that cable/bracket for the 500 and 150 variants.

v4l2-ctl -d /dev/videoN --log-status

Should tell you what audio input is being used and if the RF broadcast audio decoding microcontroller is running or muted. V4l2-ctl can also set the audio input explicitly different than the one normally paired with a particular video connector.

v4l2-ctl --help

Lists all the options.

Re: Problems With additional tuners... [ In reply to ]
Hi Andy,

I am thinking that there must in fact be something wrong with either a cable or the board for the second connection. All the settings are identical between both Video0 and Video1 except for the s-video input (1 & 3 respectively) and the audio input (1 & 2 respectively). I confirmed the cables, switched sat boxes as a test, and no sound on number 2.

I will have to crack open the box next to see if something there is the issue. For now though I am going to try and figure out how to configure MythTV to work with the HVR-1600 (at the moment it is not seeing it so my config is wrong in Myth).

Thanks again for your help and the great education.

-Peter

The HVR-1600 is configured as two video cards in MythTv:
- analog side is an MPEG encoder card like ivtv.
- digital side is a DVB device wih an S5H1409/1411 demodulator.

The analog and digital sides of the 1600 can be used independently and simultaneously, so no need to set up anything special in MythTv.

Regards,
Andy

Thanks Andy,

I have the 1600 showing up now but am trying to track down how to fix a delay/lay of audio. The audio is about a second or two behind the video.

Re: Problems With additional tuners... [ In reply to ]
Hi Andy,

I was hoping you might be able to help me out. I went and did a major package update a couple of days ago (not a version upgrade though) and now there are a couple of problems that are causing me big problems. Initially I could get one of the PVR 500's to work so then I re-installed the v4l2 driver (used git to re-download and build it) and that is what got me to this state.

The first is that what I use v4l2-ctl to "--set-input" and "--set-standard" (I then check and video works) Myth can't access the tuners anymore as they are reporting as busy (myth gives the error that all tuners are busy). The bigger problem is that when I reboot I need to re-run these commands because they get lost (on a cat check to a file the video is missing again).

It also appears that on reboots the dev/video#'s are changing for the different cards. I think this is something that I need to fix with udev based on some of the readings that I have done in the past. Unfortunately I can't say that any of the discussions on udev made a lot of sense to me.

What I want to ask you is if this is something that you have seen before and if so what was the cure that you found?

Here is what the last boot did (actually it has stayed at this organization for three boots now so maybe the driver install caused the re-order). Prior to this one the HVR-1600 had video1 with the PVR 500 split on video0 and video2.

v4l2-ctl --list-devices
Hauppauge HVR-1600 (PCI:0000:01:06.0):
/dev/video0
/dev/video24
/dev/video32
/dev/vbi0

WinTV PVR 500 (unit #1) (PCI:0000:02:08.0):
/dev/video1
/dev/video25
/dev/video33
/dev/radio1
/dev/vbi1

WinTV PVR 500 (unit #2) (PCI:0000:02:09.0):
/dev/video2
/dev/video26
/dev/video34
/dev/vbi2

Thanks,
Peter

Re: Problems With additional tuners... [ In reply to ]
Hi Andy,

I have an update. It appears that this may be a MythTV problem. Specifically one with my MySQL database as suddenly I cannot see any of my prior recordings in the listing anymore and for some strange reason the primary (and only) backend server switched itself to thinking that it is a secondary backend. All in all something very strange has happened and I am going to be beating my head against the wall once again. Doing a cat test after a reboot shows the capture cards are now holding their settings properly but myth still reports them as busy. This though I do suspect is due to a database failure of some sort.

Sorry to have bothered you.

Sincerely,
Peter

It's no bother. Glad you're on your way to figuring it out.

Regards,
Andy

Re: Problems With additional tuners... [ In reply to ]
Thanks Andy,

My analysis was right in that the problem turned out to be a DB corruption issue. A nice fellow posted on his blog a repair script that did the trick. Now I just need to figure out why I am getting "video frame buffering failed too many times" after running the live tv for some random period of time.

As a bonus though, the audio sync issue that I was having with the HVR-1600 is fixed.

Sincerely,
Peter
