VIRUS Alert !!!!! Interchange-users digest
I just received a virus from the mailing list. Please be careful on what you
are sending and make sure your computers are clean before seding emails.

Another point in my argument against HTML mail and unnecessary
attachments.

Some people say I should filter for virii, but I don't think that
is the case. If you can't reject a simple virus like the Kakworm,
you need a new immune system. 8-)

Agreed,

That is why I don't use a windows platform for email. I think filtering
out all HTML based email would be reasonable. Those that would have a
problem with this can go back and reconfigure a mail program.

If any filtering is to be done, I agree with this. Filter out HTML.

Might as well throw a vote in for me. I say filter out all text based email! Just
kiddin but on a serious side I would not mind going back to the good old days of
text only email from the list. I blow away most all HTML email that comes my way
simply because it irritates me. If I wanted a web page I can go to your site. Never
gets read unless of course it is about a virus. Got to stay ahead of the game
there. Never know when my RH box might get feeling left out and decide to be
affected just to fit in. :)

My vote would go to just trashing all HTML based e-mails period. I agree if I
wanted to see web page in my mail, I would surf to their site...

If I could also vote, then I'll vote for a HTML-free mailing list! :) If you
can, then just make the list manager bounce back HTML-spiced e-mails.

+1 I am on a developers list that does this. it is in the FAQ and list
guidelines. if html mail is sent, it is dumped. same for attachments.

+1 more. This is the best way to go, IMHO. I manage several lists with
Majordomo, and I bounce all email with attachments, be they images, HTML,
or whatever. I use the following in my mailing list config to do it:

taboo_headers << END
/^Content-Type: multipart.*/

END

I don't know what the mailman equivalent is, but that should give you an
idea. :)

I read email on a console (ssh connection to my mailserver, actually), and
although I have my mailcap set up to allow me to read HTML via Lynx, I
still prefer good old text email, and I believe it's inappropriate to send
HTML email to a mailing list anyway.

Just my 2c worth. :)

Mailman has an equivalent. I just set it to add:

content-type: text/html
content-type: multipart/alternative

It rejects HTML messages great.

Personally, I don't mind an occasional attacment of a piece of
code or an error log file. So I don't block all multpart types...
