I waited over 24 hours for this: ERROR: dev-libs/libgpg-error-1.0 failed...
I am new to Gentoo, and installed it a few days ago. I went to
install KDE and after over 24 hours of installing, I end up with
this...

...
ranlib .libs/libgpg-error.a
creating libgpg-error.la
(cd .libs && rm -f libgpg-error.la && ln -s ../libgpg-error.la libgpg-error.la)

make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory

make: *** [all] Error 2

!!! ERROR: dev-libs/libgpg-error-1.0 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 28, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

Anyone have an idea of what went wrong? Or better yet, how to fix it? Thanks!

Hello Joe,
Thank you for choosing Gentoo.
Unfortunatly, it is hard to diagnose this error.
Can you please reply to the list with more of the messages
above the error? If not, I'm confident that someone can
lend you assistance.

try :
emerge --resume --skipfirst

maybe you can get away without using gpg until you figure out
what's wrong with this one package.

Does that give you enough information? If not please let me know what
I should do to get more. I'm not so good with linux, so I'm having
problems troubleshooting this. Thanks again!

Re: I waited over 24 hours for this: ERROR: dev-libs/libgpg-error-1.0 failed... [ In reply to ]
I tried your suggestion:

gentoo log # emerge --resume --skipfirst
emerge: It seems we have nothing to resume...

Unfortunately it didnt seem to work.

Thanks for the idea.

Joe

I've seen this happen on a machine that overheated due to a faulty
processor cooler.

Thanks Neil, I guess that could be the case, as this is an older K62
450. But it seems to run fine for everything else, including the
install of Gentoo, so I kind of doubt thats the problem. Thanks for
the idea though.

The idea of overheating is not really strange as gcc is a completely
different beast when it comes to working with the CPU. For fun run the
same install with a nice factor thus bringing the load on the cpu down.
I have seen this happen a lot on K6 cpu's (still have one of them
running here)

Welome to gentoo. I don't see anywhere in the postings that follow
exactly what version of gpg you are trying. Here are some suggestions
that will help you eventually.

1. emerge -pv gpgme
2. emerge -pv kde

This will tell us what versions and USE flag settings you are dealing with

3. Learn to use gentoo bugzilla (www.gentoo.org -> bugs). When I
search for ALL gpg, I get a lot of reported errors. With your version
number information, you can see if any are applicable to your
situation.

4. You might try 'USE="-crypt" emerge ... until you get this sorted out.

try:
emerge sync
emerge kde

if emerge kde fails again on libpgp,

then emerge --resume --skipfirst

should get you past the package in question until you
can figure out why it's failing.

Ron,

I like your idea of doing the install with a lower nice factor.
However after looking at the man page for emerge, I cannot figure out
how to do this. Can you tell me what I should be doing? Thanks.

edit /etc/make.conf to include the line;

PORTAGE_NICENESS=10

(or whatever number you choose)

$ nice -n <priority> emerge kde

...where priority is in the range -20 to 19, -20 being highest and 19
being lowest.

That being said, I am not so sure how this will help. This just means
that the process will "get out of the way" of procs with higher
priority. If nothing else is using up CPU cycles, this doesn't change
anything AFAIK. I am going to give it a try though next time I have a
painfull emerge on my very hot running laptop.

You might also look at the man pages for make.conf and emerge, as I
believe you can set the 'niceness' in make.conf.
