how long does it take to compile mozilla?
Just the default USE flags, compile mozilla without gtk, without gtk+,
everything default, how long would it take?

I read several archived posts (google around) said it needs an hour on a
2GHz box, another guy complained it took more than 3 hours (he did not say
exact time) on his 850MHz box. I don't know if my box is mad, I compiled it
several times (each time mozilla upgrades), as long as I can remember it
took at least 8 hours on my 700MHz thinkpad.

Yesterday I start compile it when I left the office, the 1.7.3. with this:

#emerge sync && fixpackages && emerge mozilla

The emerge log is attached below. I don't know when mozilla exactly begin to

compile (perhaps time stamp is the first column long number? I cannot read
it.) but now it's 9:30 AM I'm in the office still waiting for it. If this is

too much time for mozilla build, I must begin to think my disk i/o or memory

is far from being optimized?

It will generally take longer on a laptop than a desktop with the same
CPU speed. Laptops have slower memory and pretty crappy I/O speeds.

A slightly OT question: which tool gives me information like this? (it
seems copy-pasted but i dont know where from)

[root@Gentoo] 12:14 PM #genlop -i mozilla
* net-www/mozilla

Total builds: 1
Global build time: 1 hour, 36 minutes and 8 seconds.

Info about currently installed ebuild:

* net-www/mozilla-1.7.3
Install date: Wed Sep 29 19:29:42 2004
USE="moznoirc moznomail -mozcalendar -moznocompose -moznoxft"
CFLAGS=" -march=athlon-xp -pipe"

So the program you're looking for would be genlop (emerge genlop), and
that's my build time, but I compiled moz without irc and mail support
(just the browser and the composer modules).

My system:

AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2200+ 512MB RAM

i emerged app-portage/genlop-0.20.2, most of features works fine, but
the -i option is unknown and is even not mentioned in the man page.
Are you using a newer version?

Yes.

[root@Gentoo] 12:16 PM #genlop --version
genlop 0.30.2 Copyright 2004 Giorgio Mandolfo.
Distribuited under the GPL v2. See COPYING for details

This version is marked unstable on x86, so you would need to

echo 'app-portage/genlop ~x86' >>/etc/portage/package.keywords

assuming that the directory /etc/portage already exists, and that you
want to remain stable on all other packages but this. You can also just add

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" to /etc/make.conf if you want all ~x86 packages
to be unmasked at all times.

This tools rocks! I think there should be a section in the handbook
about such tools, if there isn't one already... (;-)).

If you emerge gentoolkit you get genlop which can be run with genlop -t
package name. Genlop lists the times for each merge of that package and
gives you an average time.
