I found the following on the Dell forum which describes a problem I'm
having with sound on my Dell laptop. The solution is for Windows, and
I'm wondering if you guys can think of an equivalent solution in
Gentoo:
-----
The popping/ticking noise which occurs when playing sounds is caused
by the audio adapter being un-muted before playing audio and then
muted again after the audio has finished, thus causing a shift in
voltage level which causes the popping/ticking sounds. Dell has
released a new Sigmatel (A04) driver to correct this issue. Click here
to download this driver.
The pop/tick which occurs 10 to 15 seconds after playing an audio file
is caused by the Sigmatel audio codec going into a powered down state.
To correct this issue double click the Sigmatel audio icon in the
control panel and remove the check from the Enable Power Management
box. Disabling this feature should not noticeably affect battery life.
The ticking sound heard while playing Audio CDs/ DVDs has been
determined to be Drive noise being passed on the Analog CD audio
lines. A workaround for this issue is to check the mute box under CD
audio in the volume control. This has been corrected with a new system
BIOS update. Click here to download this update.
-----
I am on the latest BIOS. My sound support is compiled into the kernel
so I don't have alsa installed. I've tried turning the sound all the
way down in the xfce4 mixer, but there is no mute option. The other
thing I should try is tweaking the power management of the sound card?
The sounds I'm getting are definitely "drive noise".
