Firefox 1.0pre: rabid popup blocker
Sometimes Firefox gets so it won't allow any popups at all. In gmail,
for instance, when
I click to "print", Firefox proudly displays a banner that it blocked
a popup, even though
I've _disabled_ the popup blocker in my preferences, and/or specifically enabled
popups from that web site.

This is FF 1.0 pre.

Hi,

Firefox 1.0pre is very buggy. Take a look at bugzilla and comment the
Major UI bugs (#64267) if this problem isn't mentioned yet.

PS.: I think lot of us would be happier if a dev take an acknowlidgement
to this bug.

The problem he mentioned isn't related to the Fx ebuild. For Fx,
I've got my own "build system", and I do have the exact same problem.

FYI, I'm using FF 1.0 pre, and I cannot duplicate this problem. I have
block popup windows checked in preferences, and gmail print works just
fine, namely a new popup window and centered on that the standard
print confirmation dialog. Possibly this has something to do with the
profile. You might try the action recommended below.

I take exception to this statement. There is indeed a known problem
with the find toolbar, but I can live with that.

Take a look at bugzilla and comment the

All of you would be a little happier with a trip to google. Almost
every release of firebird/firefox from day one has had some sort of a
problem with reusing existing profiles. Most, if not all, of the other
problems listed in bugzilla #64267 are fixed by one of the following
to correct the profile after stopping firefox:

1. rm ~/.mozilla/firefox/default.???/compreg.dat
This worked for me
2. mv ~/.mozilla/firefox ~/.mozilla/firefox-old
Others had to clear the profile.
If you removed the profile, copy back your bookmarks, etc., after
restarting firefox.

IMO, the find problem notwithstanding, FF 1.0 pre is one of the most
stable firebird/firefox releases I've used. I've encountered exactly 2
bugs, and only one of them counts, since the other is fixed by working
on the profile.

Also, Tamas, it takes too much effort to reconstruct the order of the
quotes in your posts such that a reply has any sort of logical order..
Pardon my French, but it would be a really good idea (tm) if you would
drop the f###ing top posting.

YMMV,

Do you have the TBE (Tabbrowser) extension installed? Well, I have.
After I disabled/uninstalled it, I can open the gmail popups.

Veeeery eenteresting! I do indeed have tabbrowser, which I installed
on a frantic
day when I was trying to get MoxEx installed, but couldn't. It
doesn't do anything
for me that I've noticed, so we'll see what happens when I remove it.
More later.

As for top-posting, I've found interspersed postings unreadable after
about the 5th
layer, and no longer do that. Bottom posting is almost as bad.
Usually, I just want
to read what each person contributes, because if I'm interested, I
already know the
context. This may be the beginning of a flame fest on the topic, but
I've really said
all I mean to say on it.

Well, removing Tabbrowser made no discernable difference to anything.
Now I've just
got DomInspector (which has no uninstall option) and BugMeNot, which will be
unistalled next.

Re: Re: Firefox 1.0pre: rabid popup blocker [ In reply to ]
Ooops. Cancel that. The removal of tabbrowser did indeed enable the
"more options"
thingies. They just didn't look like it: i.e. no underline. But the
cursor is a hand-and-finger
and I can click to print. Yipeeee.

So: remove Ffx tabbrowser, and printing messages is again possible in gmail.

The reason some interspersed postings suck is because people don't take
the time to snip out the irrelevant stuff (they should very rarely get
to 5 layers!). But if people do it right it maximizes readability.

I assume "bottom posting" means not snipping anything, and just replying
at the bottom? I agree this is horrendous, and probably worse than top
posting. Worse, it gives a bad name to us "no top-posting" advocates.

Agreed.

Any posting without snipping is unreadable and is a mortal sin. At least
snip the sigs and list markers. The worst is the unsnipped,
interspersed, top posting. It is rarely seen anymore since those who
used it ended up in the bit bucket.
