Post your output from "emerge -pv xfce"

Well I get this when I do that:

gentoobox root # emerge -pv xfce

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

in .bashrc i have :

alias sx4='startxfce4'

then all i have to do (from the CLI i boot into) is 'sx4';
'startx' gives me KDE on the rare occasions when i want to use it.

set XSESSION="xfce4" in /etc/rc.conf

after this you can use "startx" to be be able to fire up Xfce4.

If you don´t have a startscript in /etc/X11/Sessions then create one
with this content:
====
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=XSession
Exec=/usr/bin/startxfce4
TryExec=/usr/bin/startxfce4
Name=XFce4
====
make it executable and call it "xfce4"

If you use startx to run X, then just edit your .xinitrc

# nano -w ~/.xinitrc

the last line should read "exec kde" (or whatever wm / desktop you're
currently using), just change to "exec xfce" or "exec xfce4". You should
then be able to start xfce with

# startx

If you use a display-manager such as xdm or gdm, then I'm not entirely
sure, as I don't use one.

Well I did what you said and get this:

/etc/X11/Sessions/xfce4: line 1: [Desktop: command not found
/etc/X11/Sessions/xfce4: line 6: Name: command not found

And X crashes....any other suggestions?

Could you paste your file in here?

Shame on me you are right.
The above _is_ my startscript, but I never realized it only works
together with kdm.

startxfce4

instead of "startx" does it. I´ve tested it right now.

Sorry for the inconvenience.
