Install CD gets kernel panic

Hi all,

I've tried this with both the 2005.1 profile CD and the 2006.0 profile
CD. Both get a kernel panic at the hardware detection process. The
2005.1 CD seems to search for hardware, and then panic at what seems
to be near the end. The 2006.0 CD seems to panic almost immediately
after starting the hardware detection process (no little green bar).
The error I get for *both* CDs is as follows:

"Kernel panic: Attempted to kill the idle task!
In idle task - not syncing"

Then it just hangs. The system is rather antiquated, and I would
think these sort of problems would have been worked out. Hardware
info below:

Ultra1 Creator3D (Ultra SPARC 167MHz)
256MB RAM
32GB Seagate SCSI Fast-Wide Ultra-SCSI II HDD

I've loaded gentoo on similar U1's without problems. So why can't I
boot this one to the CD? I would love to get gentoo on this box for a
personal project. Any ideas?

If you need any further info, feel free to ask. I currently have
Solaris 9 on the box and can use whatever utilities are part of that
OS to gather info.

Just pass the "nodetect" option to the kernel to turn it off.
I'll remember to document the options in silo's help in the next release.

OK, that gets me to a liveCD prompt. But I also get errors that the
audio devices and network devices weren't detected. My "personal
project" is going to be a home-built Smoothwall/IPcop type device, so
I don't really care about audio. However, the network devices are
essential. `net-setup eth0' runs, but does really configure anything.
The only device that exists afterwards is lo. Do I need to `modprobe'
something? Is that likely what's causing the kernel to fail with the
hardware detect?

Well you're not giving any oops info so i can't help and my telepathic
abilities are null.
And yeah, you'll have to modprobe whatever modules you need if you
disabled autodetection.
For a U1 Creator i guess it's sunhme.

Well, I'm not really sure what "oops info" would be handy, or where to
get it. The only thing printed to the screen is what I posted in the
first message. `modprobe sunhme' works, though, and gets me the
interfaces. That should be sufficient for the install. Thanks!
