gentoo boot from disk freezes
Hi All,

I installed gentoo on a SUN V210 using the 38MB LiveCD.
I did the setup exactly by
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-sparc-quickinstall.xml

I installed the 2.4.31-sparc kernel image which was obtained from the
livecd and silo installed fine too but at reboot i get the

Remapping the kernel... Done.

message and it freezes.... I made several kernel images but the same
situation unfortunatelly.

If I tell the livecd to boot with root=/dev/sda1 video=atyfb:off then the
system is booting fine and it's perfect.... but I would like to make my
own kernel running on that box.

I tried to put the initrd images and some other "append" things to
silo.conf as on the livecd but nothing's changed.

I checked /etc/inittab and /etc/runlevels but they're all seem to be fine
and if I boot from the LiveCD then it goes very well....
As I noticed, I don't get the Booting Linux. message. It freezes before
it's displayed. Maybe this help...

How can I get this problem done? Have you experienced such like that?

As workaround, how can i make my own sparc livecd with my own kernel?

Thank you,
Peter

Many people hit this problem, the cause is unknown and until
a capable engineer gets their hands physically on a V210
or similar system that exhibits this problem it will never
get fixed.

Switch to SILO 1.2.6 for the hard disk, for some reason that works on
UltraSPARC IIIi-based systems whereas newer ones don't.
Basically cp /boot/*.b from the livecd into the hard disk /boot and run
silo -f.
