PPC Team Meeting: Summary and Log
Hi team,

this is a summary of our Sunday's (or Monday's at least for
some) meeting.

The discussed topics were:

1. Review of the 2004.3 release
2. The 2005.0 release and the release engineer
3. OldWorld support
4. Development on the PegasosPPC
5. Gentoo/PPC Management

Topic 1: Review of the 2004.3 release

Many thanks to the team and especially Pieter who finally
created the CDs and release-files. Releng asked to add the
spec-files into CVS, what hasn't been done yet. Furthermore
there seems to be a problem with pam on a stage3
installation.

We should try to get our list of supported hardware ready.
An example of this list could be found at
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/ppc/hardware.xml

Topic 2: The 2005.0 release and the release engineer

There are some applications missing and some bugs on the
LiveCDs. dholm will collect them in a bug report, so that
they are cleaned out for 2005.0.

We want to upgrade glibc to a version with userlocales and
nptlonly USE-flags. The version in discussion is
glibc-2.3.4.20041102. All devs should test this
glibc-version for errors, especially with our current stable
gcc-3.4.1-r3. If there are errors, we should test with
gcc-3.4.3-r1. binutils with stay on version
binutils-2.15.90.0.3-r3.

X.Org 6.8.0/1 is causing some hardlocks on r128 and radeon
cards. There is a pre-release of 6.8.2 in portage, which
should be tested. If that version solves the problems we
currently have with 6.8.0/1 and does not create new, we
should switch to 6.8.2. It's not known, when 6.8.2 will be
released, but hopefully before the 2005.0-release. Bug
reports should go into our Bugzilla and coordinated with the
X-team.

The creation of the architecture specific stages and
packages-CDs will be done simultaneously. Therefore Pieter
creates the generic ppc-stages, -packages and LiveCDs, hands
and then hands out the material to hansmi (G5), SeJo (G4)
and Pylon (G3).

Topic 3: OldWorld support

As there are more and more OldWorld users who want to
install Gentoo, JoseJX and morfic will work on installation
media for the 2005.1-release (next summer). According to
morfic, our current stable profile with gcc-3.4.1 and
linux-2.6.9 makes no troubles on his OldWorld G3. Only the
LiveCDs could not be booted directly, and so it would be
nice to have specialised installation media.

4. Development on the PegasosPPC

Since our last meeting where we got the first sponsored
Pegasos machines, all Gentoo developers got them delivered.
All in all these are 13 machines, although the one of
spyderous is already in repair.

Pylon will create a list of all Pegasos-Devs, the special
area of usage and if there is active development on it.

This list could be extended with all PPC-devs and their
machines.

5. Gentoo/PPC Management

It has been said, that the team dislikes the current work of
the PPC-management. There is no regular meeting and a
ppc-bug-day is missing since months.

Pylon excuses for the slight inactivity due to massive
preparation of events.

Two dates every developer should note in the calendar:
- Bug-Day at Sat, January 8th
- Gentoo/PPC meeting at Sun, January 9th, 20UTC

Furthermore ppc@gentoo.org is filled with some devs we don't
even know why they are on it. A separate mail will be sent
and asked for their current work.
