Where to start?
I've d/l the live CD & one of the stages. I am wondering which handbook to
follow...? The general handbook mentions hardened but I'm not sure what to
do, here.

For one thing, my box seems incapable of getting an address via dhcp --unless
KDE is installed. That wasn't the case just a week ago. Don't know why it
doesn't work from the CLI any longer. I was using the hookup trying 2004.2
and had problems, so thought perhaps hardened was the way to go.

Thanks...

Hi,

The hardened project deals with augmentations to the generic Gentoo
distribution, as detailed on http://hardened.gentoo.org/. If you are
having trouble with a generic installation, you might be better off
starting here [http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/], specifically with the
Gentoo Installation Guides [http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/#doc_chap2].

Hardened should not result in KDE being required for DHCP to work, but
you haven't really given us more information, so I don't know what to
tell you.

Good luck.
