how do i work around this?

checking for unistd.h... yes
checking minix/config.h usability... no
checking minix/config.h presence... no
checking for minix/config.h... no
checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking host system type... Invalid configuration `i386-pc-linux-uclibc': machine `i386-pc-linux' not recognized

ebuild misses gnuconfig_update at least in src_unpack

well, once .51 goes stable (will happen this month before 2004.3), we can stop
populating the tree with gnuconfig_update
