2006.1 Handbooks Status

Hello, gang! In the absence of fox2mike (who did some good behind the scenes
stuff before he was called away by other things), release responsibilities were
handed down to me, so I hope I did a good job? The tracker bug (#143694) is
still open as of this writing, as I asked JoseJX to look in on some PPC
afterthoughts (#144190).

Anyway, all the handbooks are in place in /doc/en/handbook/ and in handbook/2006.1/.

Translators, start your engines! :D (oh yeah, and uncomment index.xml as
translations are added)

Many thanks to neysx for implementing conditionals; they were really a boon for
this release -- made working with the handbooks much easier. Next task is to
maybe see if we can get conditionals working for the MIPS handbook (Redhatter
did a nice job with the new MIPS hb).

Also thanks to rane, who did great work with many arches, and to SwifT, who got
the tarball scripts working (yay!!!) and shipped the doc tarballs. And to
fox2mike, who gave me some good advice on the release process that helped me
through. Thanks to the helpful points of contact in releng and from the arch
teams (agaffney, kugelfang, wolf31o2, and others) who were available to answer
questions. And thanks to anyone else who contributed that I forgot to mention.

I think that if you find any errors in these handbooks, they're mine alone. 8)

A quick question: I've been converting the Gentoo handbooks to Plucker
format[1] for some time now (not just a default conversion, but some
added sauce to make it more professional looking), and I don't run
Gentoo.

I've been asking for a proper svn repo (a public one) where I can stay
updated and crank these out on an automatic basis. Has a public svn repo
been put up where I can retrieve these? I'd hate to keep pounding the
Gentoo sites with wget every day/week/month to update the local copies.

You have already asked about 4 months ago and the answer is the same.
It will be ready when it's ready, and announced right after that.
The only difference is you now have 4 months less to wait.

Until then, you can easily check sources.gentoo.org to detect changes.
FYI, using Last-modified from the HTTP headers is *not* reliable on
www.gentoo.org because one of the nodes sends the timestamp of its cache entry
or the current time. Other nodes send the latest timestamp of all files used
to do the XSL transform.
The one from gentoo.neysx.org would be reliable but the XHTML is very different.

Hi everyone,
the italian translation team and I are translating the 2006.1 manual.

At the moment i'm having some doubts though: so far, when updating a manual to
the next version, the procedure, or the habit, was to copy in the CVS the old
manual (let's say 2006.0) in the new one (let's say 2006.1): this way it was
easy for us translators to track down what had changed and update our
localized documents.

This time it seems to me something has been done differently: the draft
directory contains some of the changes that have been done on the old version
of the manual but, apparently the documents that were changed weren't the
same as the 2006.0 version, but were changed before being committed to draft.
Am i right?

I noticed the same thing some time ago. This isn't a big problem
though, as you can easily generate the same diffs from 2006.0 to 2006.1
by something like:

$ for f in 2006.0/*xml; do diff -Naur $f ${f/2006.0/2006.1}; done

in cvs/.../doc/en/handbook/

I found that the easiest way to view actual changes since I hadn't
tracked the changes in draft at all.

I completely agree, but i would have preferred to have the differences
available on the webcvs for my team.
