New developer : Markus Duft (mduft)
It's my pleasure to introduce Markus Duft (mduft) as a new developer.
He will go among us under the name of mduft, and will work in the
Gentoo/Alt project porting Gentoo Prefix to Interix. Yes, people, that
means Gentoo on Win32.

Markus lives with his wife and daughter in Graz, Austria. He seems to
have many hobbies like reading fantasy novels, building
remote-controlled model planes, crashing remote-controlled model
planes, and last but not least, "playing good old board games" with
his wife. Err... Markus, we are a mature audience here, so no need to
call that "good old board games", OK ?

He shares an office at work with Michael Haubenwallner (haubi), who is
strangely also a member of the Gentoo/alt project.

Please everybody, give a very warm welcome to mduft.

Denis.

Yes, today isn't April, the first (remember geNToo).

Welcome!

I will love to see Windows support via cygwin and not commartial product.

Interix is free and these days bundled with Windwows, IIRC.

Why do you want it to run on Cygwin? (Honest question...)

I couldn't understand it from [1], anyway the source is unavailable right?

> Why do you want it to run on Cygwin? (Honest question...)

It is the only project I know providing good support for POSIX Windows
platform while having Open Source license.

But if you are correct and a good POSIX layer is provided built-in in
Windows, I will be happy to see stage3 for Windows.

Heh, yeah, sort of. See [2]. As far as I understand it,
Interix/Microsoft Services for UNIX plugs directly into the POSIX
whatever of Windows. What you basically get is the environment where
you can run a shell, and as a sort of bonus a ksh or csh to start off.
What Markus did, was to get normal Gentoo Prefix working on top of that.
To give you an indication of what it looks/feels like, if you start
SFU's ksh (or login through telnet -- hey it still is Windows ;) ), you
can just do a configure && make && make install of bash-3.2 to end up
with a working bash. Of course Python does NOT compile.

I think in that sense Cygwin is more Open Source, because how you get
the primary shell/environment is available too. However, for me that
doesn't matter, as the OS itself is inherently non-free in that sense,
so that's what you have to accept first thing anyway.

Just for your information, we don't do stages at the moment, not in the
forseeable future from my point of view either. Binpkgs are in the
planning. In general we just do a full bootstrap, on Interix you need
extra help from "prefix-launcher".

I separate operating system and applications... Just like you run on
HPUX or AIX... There is Windows.

This is sad... I would really like to see fully operating portage on
Windows... It was more important to me in the past when I actually
used this OS...

I this sense [1] was a great idea! You could always use quickpkg to
extract binaries.

Ok, then SFU is just your entry point to the system, like your "login"
on AIX or HPUX.

Well... making stages takes time, but more importantly, requires you to
store them somewhere, and infra has no space for that. I do, but my
internet connectivity is not sufficient for that.
Besides, using Portage's binary support is more flexible, as the Prefix
isn't fixed, but adjusted to your need(s).

I probably misunderstand. quickpkg creates binpkgs, doesn't it?

AW: New developer : Markus Duft (mduft) [ In reply to ]
Hi!

Just read the mail-archive and (i’m not at work), and felt that I have to say something about the binary packages on windows ;) (so sorry for what the outlook web-access thingy does to emails and threads :))

Right now we start using Gentoo Prefix as the primary development environment at our company. For that reason I really need a quick and easy method of setting up new machines with any of the three available version combinations of windows and interix (Interix 3.5 runs on Win2K and WinXP, Interix 5.2 runs on Windows Server 2003R2 only, Interix 6.0 runs on Server 2008 and Vista). For that purpose I wrote a setup program, which is capable of installing Interix itself (also the required windows components), setting up some basic things (for example some configurations in /etc, installing openssh, etc.), and finally unpacking a binary prefix snapshot.

The snapshot is basically just a tar of a freshly bootstrapped prefix (with some extras like gnome-terminal already compiled), normally rooted at /opt/gentoo. The snapshot is unpacked there, and voila – setup takes about 20 minutes, and after that (if you have an X server running, like for example the open-source Xming – the free one is really unperformant though…) you can start gnome-terminal to start working, yeeha!

Haubi and I had the idea, that binpks would be possible too, and as a little extension, it would be really cool to have an installer like Cygwin has for example. This poses some other problems though, like runpaths etc. I think this approach is better usable for the planned win32 cross prefix – this one will be really cool: cross compile windows native binaries using parity [1] into a separate prefix, which contains only binaries that can run completely without interix (theoretically ;)).

Cheers, Markus

Yeah thanks, i used to use this one. But (of course) it doesn't work
with the web-interface, and since a few days i'm running outlook 2007,
with which it - grml - doesn't work neither. Still with the real outlook
i managed to at least get it to quote with ">" ;)

I wonder if there's a greasemonkey script or the like for the
OL web interface. Or a privoxy/proxomitron/whatever filter.

I know I use a custom privoxy filter to help enforce my
light-text-on-dark-background browsing preferences without
killing color entirely, to reasonably good effect by now as I've
been making incremental filter improvements for several years,
so it's certainly possible to do such things. It's likely just a
matter of finding the person who has developed an appropriate script.
