xfree is done for !
in theory this should have already been done for 2004.2, but since cascading
profiles wasnt the talk of the town for that release, this was probably
missed

i've updated base/virtuals to use xorg-x11 for all the default X related
virtual providers

i've also removed all the virtual references in the default-linux tree

that means if you want xfree still in your profile, well you'll have to add
it, but SHAME ON YOU

Cheers, though it's a shame we still have no new working ATI drivers to use
with the latest version of the server.

you mean ati-drivers right ?
the bundled xorg/linux ones work for me, but i got an old crusty radeon which
ati-drivers doesnt support :(

I can't have the update process on my system halted by that package on a
nightly basis; I'll need to start hacking the ebuild fairly shortly if the
problem isn't resolved relatively soon. Is there a time estimate on a working
resolution to this problem?

The Radeon M9 in this system runs reasonably well without the drivers, however
the performance of OpenGL is pitiable without fglrx.

man portage

Concentrate on the /etc/portage/package.mask section.

We can't make estimates for how long it will take ATi to do something.
Well, we could, but they'd be completely meaningless.

I should have added a "without downgrading Xorg" comment to my previous
message. I apologize for the misinterpretation.

Who says you have to downgrade? Just mask the newer version so it never
gets installed. Once ati-drivers works, you can unmask it and it will
install.
