Besides that, the recommendation in RFC 2821 section 4.5.3.2 is to set timeouts
per command, not per line.

If you wanted continuations, you'd have to make an ESMTP extension, specify
some way for the client to activate it (a new verb, probably), and then
probably use 150 response codes and more new verbs to handle the continuations
(as mentioned in RFC 2821 section 4.2.1, regarding 1xx codes).

My understanding of RFC2821 has always been that, when multi-line responses are
used, all lines of the response must begin with the SAME status code. From
this, it follows that you cannot send /any/ response (even just the first line)
until you have decided what the status code is going to be - which presumably
defeats the point of this request.
