VIC-2FXO analog Ground Start Distance Limit
How far away from the CO can a Voice Gateway be with Ground Start Analog
lines?

I've used the vic-2fxo with POTS service from sbc/ameritech
to gateway calls to the PSTN in the past. In the worst case, i've
used it when i know there are about 10 mi (16km) of cabling between
me and the nearest fiber hut where I could possibly be put on
a fiber trunk path (usually a lightspan here in ameritech land).

i did have problems a few times with it not detecting
disconnection, but i think that was more of a gateway issue
and less of a vic issue.

I'm about 28.000 ft from the Bellsouth CO and never had any issues.

I am 18,000 ft. The line is Ground Start. Could the issue be grounding
of the Voice Gateway?

Bill,

It really depends on which vwic you use. We have seen degraded audio when
the copper gets too long:

In measurements we took last year:
The old vic-2fxo-m1 had the best long cable performance. This performed
acceptably up to 5 mi of copper.
The nm-hda and mrp3-8fxo had the worst performance where audio arifacts were
apparent above 3miles.
The new vic2-2fxo and vic2-4fxo are supposed to have improved impedance
matching to accomodate up to 5mi of copper with the same or better voice
quality compared to the vic-2fxo-m1.
