gigabit ethernet help
Hi all,

we have a cisco 7200 series router and we want to terminate ADSL layer2
user on gigabit ethernet.
We have GBIC card in the router and we have 1000Base GBIC SX module.
The network connection is as follows

Telstra IGR(telco australia)-----------single mode
fibre-------------demarcation point data centre ----------------single
mode fibre flat SC connector --------------- 7200 series router
1000Base SX module

The problem is i can't get the interface up and even if i plug/unplug
the single fibre optic the router dowsn't seems be reacting by showing
link up or down.

The lights on the Gigabit interface keep flashing Tx,Rx,link in
1,2,3,1,2,3 ---- pattern.

any suggestions or any help is very much appreciated.

Hi Phani,

SX Modules are for MultiMode fibre connections. If you have SingleMode
fibres you need either a LX (1310nm) ~10km or a ZX (1550nm) ~ 40 km
module. Please ask the Telco (Telstra) what they required.

Erich

Telstra normally have MMOF after the demarc point, although they can and do
use SMOF too, but this is rare.

You may want to check the interface settings:

media-type gbic
no negotiation auto

If no success, send a 'sh int gi0/x' and 'sh run int gi0/x'.

In this case I wonder why phani uses a single mode fibre (breakout ?)
after the demarc point as he wrote below.

Maybe you have to be check RX/TX if they are right (swap) if you have an
input (RX) the lights are normaly stop flashing even if the link isn't
up.

yep, no auto is a good one ..

Re: gigabit ethernet help [ In reply to ]
Hi All,
thanks guys for your help. as james and stavros where mentioning telstra
usually after the demarcation point it is on MMOF. but the site survey
officer came in and suggested single mode after demarcation point( which
as far as i know and understand is not really required as the distance
between demarcation to our rack is 500 mt) so ordered single mode from
the data centre to run from demarcation to our gateway. Launched an
complaint with telstra and found out that telstra placed an OMC in their
rack which is taking single mode in and MM out. so it is a bit of mess
which is getting cleared know. so hope fully in the next couple of weeks
will get the link up.

thanks for you suggestions.

cheers
phani.
