7206vxr High cpu usage
Hello.

I have high CPU usage on our 7206VXR NPE-G1 with 1 gig of memory.
We are using this router for PPPoA Broadband and also BGP for internet traffic.

Current IOS ver = (C7200-IS-M), Version 12.3(6b)
Current online users = 1845
Current BGP neighbours (full routes) = 5
Current mem usage (5 minute avg) = 292 meg
Current CPU usgae (5 min avg) = 26%
Current total throughput in = 91.09 bits per sec
Current total throughput out = 95.46 bit per sec

I've been reading the list and following the threads on high CPU usage,
we have no compression applied to the Virtual-Access interfaces. I'm
out of my depth here so any help would be appreceated.

Wayne:

Please post a copy of "sh proc cpu | exc 0.00.*0.00"

Also, if you can capture a copy of:
show ip traffic
sh ip interface
show interfaces switching
and post that somewhere we'll likely see something to get you started on.

Regards,

Frank

Hello Frank

Posted output as requested.

http://www.link-connect.com/cisco/show-ip-interface.txt

http://www.link-connect.com/cisco/show-int-switching.txt

http://www.link-connect.com/cisco/sh-proc-and-show-ip-traf.txt

I have only grabbed the first 200 interfaces.

Thanks for your help

Wayne

Why are you concerned with this load? You're seeing an average load of
up to 30% on your per-minute stats, which is not really high, is it? The
spikes you see (the max cpu) is likely from the BGP scanner, which is
doing its job scanning the full Internet table. Nothing wrong with this,
it's a low priority process, so if something more urgent comes along, it
will just sleep..

Based on the data you've just posted: I would investigate why
GigabitEthernet0/1 shows such a high number if process-switched packets,
but as long as you don't spend much CPU time in the IP Input process
(which you don't, according to the "show proc cpu" you've posted), I
wouldn't worry about it. Clear the counters and keep an eye on it..
