PPPoE connections that won't clear.
We have a Cisco 7206VXR with an NPE400 running c7200-is-mz.122-26.bin. I
have about two dozen PPPoE connections that won't clear.

Yes, of course. =) Sorry that I didn't mention the obvious.

I also tried 'no interface Vixxxx', but that was rejected.

If I remember correctly, a long shot this week, we have seen a few
DSL customers whose modems reconnect immediately. When that happens,
the cisco sh user report doesn't seem to notice that they were ever
disconnected. RADIUS accounting does show a disconnect and a new
session.

This is all memory. Could be completely bogus. YMMV.

Do you have RADIUS logs, or a lack thereof, to verify thay the don't
clear?

I do see my PPPoE users reconnecting several times a day, which I do find
perplexing. Perhaps that's that reason I have these in the first place?
While we have RADIUS accounting turned on, we have our users limit set to 2
so I don't think that's contributing to the blank lines. If you were
thinking of something more specifically let me know.

Re: PPPoE connections that won't clear. [ In reply to ]

Re: PPPoE connections that won't clear. [ In reply to ]
Arie:

Good point. With 'debug vpdn error', 'debug vpdn event', and 'debug
vtemplate' I received the following:
1y14w: Vi2025 VPDN: Reset
1y14w: Vi2025 VPDN: Unbind interface
1y14w: Vi2025 VTEMPLATE: Ignoring free request, still in use
1y14w: Vi2025 VPDN: Vtemplate failure 10 upon freeing interfac

It would be nice to know why VTemplate still thinks its in use.

Frank

Could you please try using the "cleant interface vi2xxx" with some debugs
on? (things like debug vpdn, debug ppp etc)
This would let us know what is going on

Thanks
Arie

I do have that command, and it did a good job of clearing out my existing
PPPoE connection, but did not clear out the empty-lined PPPoE connections.

Oli is recommending I upgrade to 12.3, so perhaps that's the best advice.

Just for the archives: I usually don't blindly suggest "upgrade and be happy".. But with the new PPP/AAA/VPDN code in 12.3, troubleshooting stuff like this (and possibly also clearing the sessions) is much easier, plus the enhanced scalability, etc.

To troubleshoot this (if it's really worth the effort), you could look at the state of the session (show pppoe session) and go from there, but it could be difficult to find out why these VAI's are in a "stuck" state.

Wouldn't 12.2SB be a better choice?

well, yes, but given Frank's scalability requirements, I'd rather
recommend 12.3, which has many important BRAS features and enhancements,
and has gotten much more deployment exposure than 12.2SB.

Frank,

Are you using multi-link PPP? If you do, you may need to clear the bundle
(should be a different interface, can't recall how it is called...)

Are you running very old code? You may want to migrate to 12.2SB or 12.4...

I missed Oli's email. I agree that 12.3 is a good choice. I also know about
customers very happy with 12.3T
