Is Cherokee Project still active?
Hi,

as far as I can see the Cherokee Project hasn't been updated since October 2011, almost one year now. It is still version 1.2.101.

I just want to know if the project has been abandoned, and whether I need to keep looking for an alternative.

Thanks

Re: Is Cherokee Project still active? [ In reply to ]
If you check out the last years commit, noting really important was changed. just only a few bugfix and pull request.
Maybe the main project was not shut down but the developement is definetly slowed down.
I was a fan of the cherokee webserver (before i was using apache for years, and im never go back), but today the nginx webserver take over everything.
It just doesn't have any competitor on the linux platforms.
Nginx doesn't have own admin UI (have many third party control panel) but the cherokee admin is incredible slowing down when you have hundreds of websites on the same server so its totally useless anyway, and the main cherokee webserver often segfault if you have so many websites. Editing the cherokee.conf by hand is a horror, but i have no other choice since the webUI is not working, at least i need to wait many minutes(!) before the page is refreshed after my commit.

Cherokee lost many users since the last half year and this is very bad for the project.
see this:
http://trends.builtwith.com/Web-Server/Cherokee

I feel sorry about that...

Re: Is Cherokee Project still active? [ In reply to ]
Well,

Develotment slowed down, sure it is.
But, there were some 'big' bugfixes in main cherokee branch (also
please notice github repo
https://github.com/cherokee/webserver/commits/master not old SVN one)
and there IS activity as you can see. I would avoid sites that are
checking 'some' websites for usage etc.

If you are having that problems, really consider update to latest
master branch (much better than current stable one).

Then why we dont have a new version since a year now?
If the developers dont think its ready for a new release its still in testing phase...
Maybe the latest snapshot have some bugfix but probably produce some new too, and i dont want to be a beta tester in a big web server. My boss will take my head off if i play with the production servers :)

Re: Is Cherokee Project still active? [ In reply to ]
Why no version ? Because read last Alvaro messages.

We're in stage where migrating everything on github, creating new
page, Skinkie is taking care about bugfixes in cherokee core and
really believe me, you *should* use master branch instead of latest
stable because it's probably more stable, or if you don't want to use
latest 'cherokee core' just use latest admin & CTK because they are
definitely better ritght now (some bugfixes...)

I don't want to use anything else than aptitude, or apt. And as I can see I am not alone with that thought. So for me and many others, Cherokee did not advance one step, despite the 9 day old commit, that's of no use to us. If nginx became so popular it's worth a try. Migrating to github sounds cool, but if you stop taking care of debian sources, well, sorry.

If you miss pushing out major updates, over some migrating work, then you will lose users, because others don't do it like this. For me it seems, Cherokee will become a tool for nerds. (No offense)

Re: Is Cherokee Project still active? [ In reply to ]
I just wanted to support all the aforementioned (stadtpirat, Péter, ...), : if it's not in aptitude, it practically doesn't exist for me.
I'm not primarily a developer, but a user with limited time, I'm not going to pull github snapshots, see if and how they work, compile, ... etc.
One of the awesome features of Cherokee is its graphical admin interface, which is obviously NOT geared towards hard core developers but rather casual users. So the developers should make sure that those who just want to *use* cherokee without much of a hassle can do so.
Cheers from Munich, Germany,
Johannes

Re: Is Cherokee Project still active? [ In reply to ]
its not just about the debian packages. i would happy for a single tarball, if somebody say it: this is the RC1 (or something)
but as i see in the github page many commit is contains 'test'. i dont want to use a source what i dont know is stable or not. how can i decide what snaphot could i use? what is stable for daily use what is not? im not have time for beta testing. if the latest stable is a year old so be it, but not even a beta1, beta2, ... or RC1, RC2 etc.. come up in the last one year...i dont know...im not happy about it.

If you miss pushing out major updates, over some migrating work, then you will lose users, because others don't do it like this. For me it seems, Cherokee will become a tool for nerds. (No offense)

Hi,

It has been made pretty clear before. We are maintaining Cherokee on
Github. Target is still to fix a (real) bug each week. The Debian
maintainer has said he didn't want to make packages anymore, for good
reasons: he couldn't maintain and backport all fixes. Sounds pretty fair
to me. There is absolutely nothing in Cherokee that would justify a
backport demand. The server architecture that has been released isn't
different from any previously release. In this respect the *only* change
that would make a true Cherokee 2.0 was the event based system. Which has
been developed in a seperate branch, and abandonned for development on
Speedy/HTTP2 (and a true SSL fix was released in the master branch).

My primary concern as Cherokee maintainer is having my webserver running
as stable as yours. I am deploying Cherokee on all my systems and on my
clients servers. In this respect I dislike the fact that anything related
to apt removes the 'source' part of 'open source'.

You can get the Big Mac at McDonalds and you can get old "stable" binaries
at an apt repository. Demands to get binary updates for << insert your
distro here >> is asking McDonalds for organic ingredients, because your
burger tastes weird. I find it curious that people are putting their trust
in a gratis binary distribution which they are certainly not able to fix
theirselves. And considering their distribution's binaries "more stable"
than the sourcecode that the upstream developers carefully maintain.
It is also taken for granted that an open source project provides binaries
to their distribution of choice.

In all my daily work I am making strict layer distinctions I want to
operate within given a certain project.

- Providers of raw material
- Aggerators of raw material
- Integrators or Enhancers of raw material
- Service Providers
- End-User

I most cases I want to stay at the Provider/Aggregator level of
business, and see other businesses flourish in providing services or
enhancements of my work. I do not want to compete with them, with
offering binaries to my work I am competing with the third layer.
This mailinglist should help end-users. If your service provider (or in
this respect anyone in this community) doesn't want to provide binary
packages you could hire someone that does that for you, or learn how to
do it for yourself from the documentation we provide. Certainly you will
understand that the only choice you have when something breaks down is to
switch products, not to solve your problem. Especially when you fully
depend on others and the only choice you have is to wait for a binary
update without any true service level agreement.

Obviously this is pretty black and white. And it is pure economics that
some projects have a lot of people offering their free or paid time in any
of the layers above. If yesterday it was Apache and today it is Nginx that
doesn't change why I like prefer architecture of Cherokee and its
admin over other open source onces.

So is this project still active? Yes, because bugs get fixed and questions
get answered.
